question on .50calBMG rifles

Thinking seriously that it's time to put the down payment on the .50BMG rifle. Anybody have any thoughts on what to buy. I don't plan to do any serious competition shooting, just make a lot of noise and big holes in beer cans when I get the chance... I'd really like to get a receiver and have a take-down built using M2HB surplus barrels.

I don't own one, and haven't even shot one yet ... in spite of my best efforts to wrangle an invitation ... ;)

But, I've been reading about them. Take at look at the .50BMG chapter in 'Boston's Gun Bible' ... he's got some interesting observations. See http://www.javelinpress.com .

Another source of good info, in addition to the responses you'll get here, will be the 50 Caliber Shooters Association ... http://www.fcsa.org .

Have fun, and good luck.

the lower AR reciever has the trigger

the 50 cal upper has the bolt & chamber

to load it you press out the rear takedown pin,
swing open the reciever,
and there is a screw breach.
back out the screw (they recommend a cordless drill)
drop in a round
screw the breach closed
button up the lower
ready aim fire

repeat

I have the ArmaLite AR-50. My first intentions were only to make big holes in paper and just joy shooting. Then I got mixed up with a bunch of guys that like to compete every month at a local club.
Well now my fun shooting has turned into serious target shooting. I started out buying surplus ammo just to plink with, now I'm into reloading for this monster.
We shoot at 550 yards and my first batch of reloads produced a 5 shot 7 3/4" group. This wasn't even with match bullets, just 700 grain collet pulled ball bullets.
Club record at our club is 5 shot 3 3/4" group at 550 yards. I have a long ways to go but I'm confident the ArmaLite can compete.

.50cal

Thanks for all the ideas from everybody. I was looking in Chandler's "Death From Afar" series and there's a neat looking set-up on the cover of vol.III made by Redick(?). I am leaning toward the Armalite. Read several good and OK reviews on it. I do already belong to the FCSA. :-)

Mcmillan

Mcmillan's are great if you have the $$$ to spend for them. I want to get my rifle and have enough left over to pay for the reloading press for my 1000 pulled API's... I was in contact with the company in Hungary(?) that bought the rights to the Gepard .50 in Europe. They wanted a rep in the states.
Got too busy to keep up with the correspondence with them. The Watson is an interesting concept. Just finished reading an article in FCSA about it. As long as the batteries in your portable screwdriver hold out you're OK.
