question on 1100 rem

Hi all,
I have an older 1100 that is in excellent condition. As far as I knew I could only shoot 2 3/4 shells. I am planning on doing some duck/goose hunting for the first time this year and was looking at what was available in a replacement barrel so that I could shoot steel. My confusion popped up when I looked into the steel replacement barrels for the 1100. (the barrel is designated for 3") The description reads
"1100 Steel Shot barrel - used with non magnum receiver, you can shoot 2 3/4 Magnum lead or steel, or 3" magnum steel shot shells. DO NOT USE 3" Mag lead."
I was working under the assumption that my receiver would not function with a 3" shell. Also Why would I be able to use 3" steel, and not lead. Finnally if I can only use 2 3/4 shells, will that work for ducks and geese? Thanks GRIZBEAR

NOTE: Model 1100 Steel Shot Barrels are designed for use with 2-3/4" or 3" Magnum steel or lead shot shells when used on Magnum receivers and 2-3/4" or 3" Magnum steel or 2-3/4" lead shotshells when used on non-Magnum receivers.

The above is from Remington's on-line barrel selector. If this is what's got you confused, you're not alone. I think there was a typo when the copy was written. We all know how easy it is to mess-up when cutting and pasting.

My basic understanding is that the barrels are interchangeable in 2-3/4" and 3" actions. But, 3" shells won't function properly in a 2-3/4" action.

Have you considered 2-3/4" bismuth loads for ducks and geese? They're more expensive than steel, but cheaper than a new barrel. Also, the bismuth loads preform better than steel because the pellets are denser.
