Question of Barrel Seal on Rem 1100

Was having some issues with my Rem 1100. Problem was bolt was not closing into battery on the shell pick up by the carrier.
Took it to a guy who worked on guns as more than a hobby. He said he felt the recoil spring was okay but... but the barrel seal had some nicks in it. He ordered the (rem) barrel seal. Tested fired the gun by firing 3 quick shots in which the shotgun did not malfunction.
But after I got home I noticed the barrel seal was riding on the end on the piston as in this pic

Is this the correct way to position the barrel seal..on the end of the piston?
Thanks

No, the bbl seal(o-ring) should not be riding on your piston. The seal sets snuggly in its own groove on the magazine tube and should stay stationary in the groove. From the looks of your picture, the seal (o-ring) is the wrong size. To big.

Google "How to clean and maintain a REM 1100". There are some vids on YouTube that shows disassemble, cleaning and assembly thoroughly.

Thanks guys....I saw the 2nd video you posted KlawMan after I posted....
Man....I always rolled the barrel seal in the grove before and not on the piston....I never seen it on the piston before and the guy said my shotgun ran okay like that......
He told me he ordered the seal from Numricks for off the 11oo parts list.....

Question....could a bad barrel seal cause the malfunction I described in my 1st post?

Thanks :)

pdh,
Is it possible for you to leave the pistons on tube, separating them and posting another pics. I'm thinking you have the old style piston ass'y.

To answer your question as to whether the o-ring being on the piston could cause your problem... yes it can cause the o-ring job is to seal in gases so your shotgun will cycle. Gas seepage will either cause shotgun not to cycle at all or short cycle.

Klaw

I'm thinking of the two vids you posted, the first vid shows newer style pistons with the outer edge of the most forward half of the piston being flat while the second vid shows the older original style piston ass'y. and that inner edge is tapered with the outside edge has sort of a shoulder. I'm thinking pdh has the older style with the shoulder and his o-ring is to big letting it climb up and stick on the forward facing shoulder.

Shortwave. It is the old style piston assembly. I bought my 1100 back in the early 80's. I can still get pic tomorrow if you want to see them. It is in excellant shape......problem I am have may be the action spring?
Thanks:)

Is the o-ring the same size for the old and new style piston assembly?
And...would the new style assembly work on my shotgun?

From the picture posted by pdh I can't tell if the barel seal (O-ring) is in the groove and it just looks like it is riding on top of the piston.

I second shortwaves motion for a picture of the two halves of the piston assembly it they do come apart.

This manual may helpo, but it may be of too old an 1100. http://users.dls.net/~rdouglas/Rem_1100_Notes__Rev_with_Pix_of_Disassembly.pdf

The guy that should know this is Zippy13, but I think you have it on backwards

Here you go fellas....I believe the assembly is correct here. The o-ring was bought off the 1100 parts list from Numrick Gun Parts.
Thanks again

I am going to go out and test fire it today see what happens. If the new piston assembly is a much improved design....I may get it...

I got the new style replacement piston ring set for my older 1100 when I ordered new 'O' rings. Would not eject! Swapped back my old rings and it ran as before - perfect.

Your piston rings are on correctly.

Should be no reason the oring ends up on piston lip if it's the right size. May have been stretched out, stocked wrong at Numrick's...who knows.

Also, a remote possibility but worth mentioning... some chemicals such as degreasers and penetrating fluids (i.e. PB Blaster) will distort or swell regular rubber o-rings.

Heading out for a pheasant hunt this Sunday....going to run some shells through it tomorrow for a test trial :D hope it runs well...would love to take it

Ran about a box of shells through my 1100 and she ran without a hitch. Very gratifying. ......
Ready to go out and bust some pheasants.
Thanks fellas.....i

With R-1100s, when they're good, they're very, very good; but, went they're bad, they're horrid. Glad yours is working great.
