Question For The Smith & Wesson Experts

I will preface all of this by saying that I am a relative newbie to Smith revolvers department despite being a seasoned autoloader guy. So forgive my ignorance here if my question seems a little odd. I have been reviewing some of the prior posts on the subject, but did not come-up with the answer.

Question: I have a Smith & Wesson Model 629 with a 6" barrel with rosewood grips. On the interior of the cylinder chamber is stamped "M 629-1" with a serial number of "AUK06xx". Am I too assume that this gun was manufactured sometime in the late 1980's or early 1990's.

I know that there are several models of the 629 ranging from the M629-1 through the M629-4. Does the -1 and -4 indicate a production year range?

Just curious...any help would be appreciated.

Thank You.

the dash number is S & W's way of denoting a modification to the model number and is not tied to a specific year. -1 on your 629 revolver could be a different mod than a -1 M-19.

Your 629-1 was made between 1982 and 1988. I can tell you that much. Don't ask for more! ;)

Sounds similar to my 21st birthday present. (I get to pick it up in a week and a half, yay!) 6" 629-1, lightly used perhaps? Mine will get a wood grip upgrade later, as it wears Hogue rubbers currently.

Good luck and wish you well on your quest for info.

Ohh found a reference to the 629-1 being produced from 82 to 88 out on the web. Thanks for the input !!!!

John,

Your 629 was likely produced in 1987. The dash numbers in the S&W model number indicate an engineering change rather than a period of manufacture. As an example, the 629-1 eliminated the pinned barrel and counterbored cylinder, as well as a change in cylinder OAL, compared to the 629 "no dash" version. I believe current 629's are 629-6's.
