Question for the Sig fans here.

Ok this is for the Sig guys or gals. Im interested in purchasing either a new in box P225 or a P228. They are both standard (no nite sites or special finishes). The P225 runs $509 and the P228 runs $569. I've handled both and they feel both really close to each other. I dont prefer one's feel over the other. Mag capacity is not an issue as we are not allowed to carry. I've heard praises on each gun but would like a little more insight. So please tell me which you would choose and why.
Thanks Gemini

I had the same dilemma a while ago. I chose the P228. Why? Because it was about the same size as the P225, it has a higher capacity (13+1), a bit thicker grips, history of service in the world's military and police forces, and the coolness factor. Plus, they are supposedly getting harder to find. I dunno if this is true or not.

I had some troubles with the 228 at first ( disappointed with accuracy ) but finally got that under control with practice.

Get the one that appeals best to your gut instinct. The price on the NIB 228 is pretty decent, depending where you live. However, I have heard that the older W.German proofed 228s were more accurate than the newer ones assembled in the US.

Plus, with the purchase of the 228 I am one step closer to owning every gun in "Rogue Spear; Black Thorn."

The P228 would be my choice. It is nicer, more classy, and accurate. They're both fine handguns but I honestly would choose the P228 over all the other Sig compact pistols. Most Sig owners would agree that the P228 is just a better gun.

The P-228...

...is my favorite SIG-Sauer. Great combination of size, balance, capacity. I even prefer it to the (granted, more durable) P-229 with its' milled stainless slide, as the P-228 has a more balanced and less top-heavy feel.

Sig P228 Notebook-

Lot's of very good, valid point's here; especially the post by
Tamara, as I am in complete agreement. I would like to
carry the issue one step further; having owned the world
famous P226, P228, and the American classic P229. I even
prefer the P228 over the full size P226; cuz out-of-the-box
accuracy from the P228 is superb, just as good as the P226.
I like the compactness and near perfect balance of the P228;
and I disliked the balance of the P229, as well as the European
grip of the P226.:( While the P225 is a great firearm in it's
own right; I would have to choose the P228, as well. And I
might add, $569.00 is a very attractive price.:D :)

Best Wishes,

I'd go with the P228 for the above mentioned reasons of balance and accuracy. No special finish is also a wise choice given Sig's recent run of cosmetic problems. At those prices I'd be tempted to get one for each hand.

Unless you have small hands, go for the 228. I have both, like both a lot, and when viewing them side by side, the net difference in grip diameter is negligible. The 228's grip is more 'square' vs eliptical for the 225. the 225 feels slightly better to me, but both feel great, and for the extra capacity, I've gotta vote for the 228, all other things being equal.

You'll have one advantage if you get the P225......You won't be chasing after all those $125, hi-capacity magazines, so you'll save a lot more money in the long-run than the original $60 price difference!

Hold on a minute ...

are you guys kidding me? you're actually recommending the P228 for balance & accuracy? these are SIGs, the difference between these 2 pistols on performance metrics is like .004%!!

only significant difference - and its a big one - is that the P225 with a short trigger is MUCH easier to handle than a P228 with same. if the measurement from the base of your thumb (wrist) to the end of your index finger is 6.5 in's or less ... P225 ... decision made. $450 NIB on GunBroker.com.

But also, the P225 is an extremely rare piece of classic SIG history. Harder to find but widely regarded as the signature SIG worldwide. in 9MM, this pistol is still the first choice of the Swiss police AND 3 out of the 4 lead instructors at the SIG Academy in VA. All SIGs will perform well for you. Join the elite band of SIG owners who don't collect 47 pistols, we just own the best & keep the P225 in its rightful place as the premier handgun of those who - given a choice - choose form, function & nostalgia for the great JP Sauer classics.

I had a 225 for a while. It did what it was supposed to, no less than you would expect from a Sig.

Its too big for a single stack 9mm though.

I just could never develop the psychological bond to it that I must have to want to keep a gun for very long, so I dumped it for something else (don't even remember what), and have never regretted it.

It was an OK gun, just didnt do anything for me.

Asking SIG owners which model they prefer is almost akin to asking parents which child they prefer... The easy way (although not the inexpensive way) around the dilemma is to buy the 225 and the 228.

Seriously, though, that's a tough call and it would be hard to fault you for either choice. Personally, I find my 225 to be perhaps the most comfortable pistol I've ever handled. The ergonomics are about as good as they get. The downside is that capacity is low for its size.

On the other hand, the 228 is no slouch in the ergonomics department, and it does hold an extra five rounds (more, if you use the longer 226 mag).

As for the balance difference between the 229 and the 228, I was given a surprise today. I've got a 229 (.357sig) and never gave the 228 much thought, thinking it to basically be a 9mm version of the 229. But a local shop has a (supposedly early '90's factory production) full nickel 228. When I picked it up, my very first thought was "wow, this really balances well." Then I handled the 229 beside it and indeed found it to be ever so slightly top-heavy in comparison.

Oh well, just one more SIG I have to go out and get now, I guess...

Take care. Marko

For 569.00 I would have to get the P-228 and here is why.
Magazines for my P-225 (when I can find them) are running 40-50.00. Used preban P-226 and sometimes used preban P-228 mags can be found for 50-60.00 from alot of online dealers and gunshows.

569.00 for a P-228 is really good, 509.00 for the 225 seems a little high.
