Question for LEO's and trainers

I am curious about what is required for the shooting qualifications in your departments? I am trying to find out what they are in my area.

IS there time pressure? Reloads? Handgun only? Or is shotgun/carbine included?

In my area I know they only have to qualify a few times per year, because that is how often they buy ammo at the gunshop.

Do SWAT/ERT have more frequent or demanding requirments for shooting?

I only know of a couple LEO in my area that have good or better shooting skills, there may be more but have not bumped into them yet.

And I do realize that shooting skills are very seldom used by LEO...but one incident still sticks in my mind. My friend that works in the local gunshop, and who knows most of the LEO in the area, watched a LEO empty 3 mags full of 40 S&W from a Glock at an injured deer [hit by a car] without hitting it once.

We qualify with duty weapon, off duty weapon, shotgun (1 in every car/three cars) and rifle (sks's). On handguns we qualify from 25 yds on in. Lets see if I remember this right....25 yds strong side, weak side barricade and kneeling. 15 yds strong hand, weak hand kneeling. We also shoot from 7 and 3 yds. I fired a 289/300 with my duty Beretta 92FS and a 299/300 with off duty S&W 6906. I dropped a few points with the 92FS from the 25 yd kneeling. We also do a tactical/stress type course....going thru doors, jumping over walls, crawling thru tunnels...high stepping thru tires....shooting around barrels, mail boxes...etc. We are a small dept so we only qualify once a year but I believe that we are the only ones in the area that do the tactical/stress course.

Qualify twice in 12 month period.

Standard F.B.I. qualifacation course. 50 rounds fired from 25[18] 15[12] 7[10] & 5[10] yard lines.[Duty & off duty weapon.] Each stage is timed. 80% score is needed to pass muster. possible 250 = perfect.

Shotgun = 2 rounds [slugs from 50 yards] 5 rounds 00 buckshot from 7 yard line. pass pellet count in standard b-27 target ??? slug = center mass shot, both rounds.

Not really all that tough...

Once a year in in service training. Day and night at the same date. Finally included this year were drills for moving targets, support hand and one handed use of the weapon, and for some godawful reason shooting skeet with a riot gun. We also run a combat course, mixed with the shotgun and handgun, most of it is steel.
Daytime qual: 2 rds @3 yds, for a total of 6 rds, 2 sec @
6 rds @5 yds, 3 strong hand supported and 3 weak hand only, 10 sec
7 yds, fire 3, fire 2, fire 1 and reload firing 2 weak handed only. The next stage is 12 rds in 20 sec
15 yds, 12 rds in 30 sec
25 yds, 3 prone, 3 kneeling barricade.
Night time is similar. Shotgun is 5 rds @ 15 yds, mixing with combat loading and cruiser safe. We don't use slugs, so....
Special teams train more than the average line officer, and tend to do more shooting and drills.
What is sad is we have an open range, free ammo, and still have people fail to qualify.

We are given one hundred rounds a month to practice with. If we want more we can get it.

We qualify four times a year and each qualification is different, ie: tactical, target, timed, non-timed, etc.

Qualify biannually with duty weapon and off duty weapons (Up to three) 65 rounds total, from 25, 15, 7, and 3 yards. Reloads and weak hand required on both pistol and shotgun. Shotgun is 15 buckshot, 5 slug. Rifle is optional carry, must be able to keep 20 rounds in a 8" circle at 100 yards. No scopes, no AK's. All stages are timed, 2 seconds at the three, up to 30 seconds at the 25.

The 50 yard shots with slugs, is that from off hand, kneeling, or a rest?

WE qualify twice a year with duty guns.

Pistol qual is a 34 or 36 round course (don't remember exact #) shot on steel type silhouettes with scoring being hit or miss.

Range is from 25 yards to 7 yards with 6 shots fired at the 25 yard line; from holster 2 rds standing, 2 kneeling and 2 prone in 20 seconds.

It's amazing what a large group of stupid people can accomplish.

Our PD hold qualifications 4 times a year.

At these times we qualify each time with duty side arm and additionally- 2 times for shotgun and rifle, and once for backup and off duty guns.

We use two different courses, 25 rounds each form 25 yards and in, but with differing emphasis - one is a movement course and one is a night course. The long guns each a have a course designed for them (rifle from 100 yards out, moving in to 50 yards with 30 rounds and shotgun, using 5 round each of buck and slug, from 50 yards for slugs, moving in to 15 yards where buckshot is used, different stages in between)

We also have 4 in service firearms training sessions a years which cover whatever area the instructors think we need to. 50 rounds of sidarms ammunition is supplied each month for personal practice. I'm working on expanding this program, but it doesn't look like we're going to do much more any time soon. I'm happy with it though as there aren't any onther local depa=rtments who have a program anywhere near as good as ours, but I think we could do better.

One other thing we have is a competition shoot once a year. We couple that with a department BBQ and keep a trophy in the PD with the winner's bragging rights engraved for other the other officers to envy. This last is to encourage the personal practic preogram. (We have a lot of good shooters in the department and consequently an instructor has yet to win this award,(first year since its inception) and we did try!)
