Hey Jim,

A while back you posted a response to one of my questions, but unfortuately I didnt get to do the work right away. The search function is disabled so I guess I'll ask again.

The question was in regards to M1A Handguard removal. I seem to remember you had a trick using the bullet end of the cartridge. I plan to replace my handguard with a vented style. If you could go over this process again I would appreciate it.

Thanks!

Remove the stock and turn the rifle upside down on a work bench. Wind the rear sight down or let it hang over the edge of the bench. You will see that the handguard clip has a hole at each side. It is not the ideal way, but insert the bullet point of a FMJ cartridge into one of the holes, and push down (toward the top of the rifle) while prying the clip outward using the cartridge as a lever. Once one side of the clip is free, do the same with the other side. Note that this may scratch the barrel and also wreck the bullet point or bend the cartridge.

Jim
