Question for Dr.Rob and other FEG Hi Power owners

Dr.Rob:
In another thread you state you would use:

Personal Defense? Colt Commander .45 auto or FEG Hi-power clone in 9mm The FEG is far more relaible than my old Colt.

Competition? FEG Hi Power/Colt 1911

I have a FEG PJK-9HP which is very ammo sensitive. UMC and Winchester range ammo do not always cycle it correctly. I have FTE which causes jams. Speer Gold Dot +P seems to work fine but a steady diet of +P seems extreme. What ammo do you use for the two situations above?

Other opinions also welcome from FEG owners. What works for you?

I just currently got a FEG that was made in the earlly
90's . I have shot about 250 rounds of UMC ammo
threw it , and it has never Failed. If that particular ammo
doesnt work for yours i would try Federal or Blazer. But
as for Defense ammo i think most any +p will feed reliably.
I would carry either Corbon 115 Grain , or Glazers for Defense .

I would try hotter range ammo. UMC is crummy stuff and loaded very light. S&B is loaded to Euro pressures. Magtech seems reasonably warm. Either is more accurate than the loads you mention.

Or you could buy a lower power recoil spring for practice.

I also have a PJK 9 HP it must be an older one because it came with 2 13rd mags and walnut grips . It is very reliable with all ammo from federal hydra shocks to wolf 9 mm . I liked it so much I
ordered its 45 acp BIG BROTHER the GKK 45 I hope its as reliable
and accurate as my PJK . :D

I've only had my FEG for a couple of years, but it's never had a FTF, right from the opening bell. Other than a slightly heavier trigger, that's getting better with use, it's been flawless. It does feel much better without the magazine disconnect... :)

Mine didn't start jamming until I had a LOT of ammo through it. Pop out the extractor and CLEAN under it. (the pin retaining it comes out through the top of the slide and its tricky.. so be forewarned.) The "early" model FEG's have a lot of rough marks on the outside but the innards are usually top notch. Clean it thoroughly, the reassemble and grease it properly. Sounds to me like your extractor is sticking.. could be you have a bit of primer grit/powder residue/brass sticking your gun.

I have shot fiocchi, reloads, UMC, winchester white box, pmc, wolf, etc out of mine at the range. In competition I generally use UMC or Winchester white box 115gr FMJ ($10 per 100 at walmart).

I also have a fave "defense load" of winchester silvertips 115gr, OR PMC Starfires. The starfire has a nice rounded olgive that makes it feed like an fmj. I like the slightly higher velocity of the silvertips, but both are really good stuff. I've used both loads in competition.

I do NOT use +p loads in any of my guns, though some of my reloads were +p+ Then I backed off of them. +p? Get a bigger gun. Seriously. I have no need or desire to shoot +p+++ machine gun ammo out of my pistol, or wear out my barrel throat because some guy at the skunk works wanted 25 extra fps.

You may find that 124 grain shoots better in your gun.

Honestly my FEG eats EVERYTHING you put in it, uses magazines from 5 different mfg's and the ONLY ones I don't like are those 17 shot South African ones, as the followers stick.

Dr. Rob,

My FEG P9R has a constant habit of jamming. The bullet casing is loose enough in the chamber, but doesn't extract always and thus it jams as a new round begins to be inserted. Really how difficult is it to take the extracter out and clean it. I can't find a good exploaded view of this gun to begin the process. Also, Century Arms tells me this gun is the same gun as the Kassnar MBK. Is this info reliable? Because GunandParts has the schematic for the Kassnar.

Uh...I don't remember the designations. :o The PJK-9HP is the Hi-Power clone, yes?

From what I've heard, quality kinda varies from pistol to pistol. Mine has been nicely reliable; the only problems arise when I use Winchester FMJ. This stuff seems about a milimeter too long to work with my magazines...funny, I have half a dozen HP mags, from 13 to 30rd, and the problem occurs in every single one.
However, the gun functions flawlessly with Golden Sabers and CorBon +P hollowpoints as far as carry loads go. For cheap plinking and practice, PMC FMJ is perfect.

When I saw this thread, I thought it looked familiar.
I guess an update is in order.
Shortly after I started this I purchased a Browning extractor and spring and installed them. My FEG has not jammed once with any ammo since installation, including the brands I thought were causing the problem. By the way, the parts fit perfectly without modification. I also installed a Browning trigger which really improved the trigger "feel" for some reason.
In any case, I now love to shoot this gun several times a week. I hope someday to own a real HP too.
I'm hooked.

Thanks for the replies.

Dave

Thanks for the update. Glad to hear that the Browning parts were interchangeable, and that they solved the problem.

I have also recently started having Jamming problems with My
PR9 , but iam glad that yours works better . I think their definitly
a good gun for the money . But from what i've experienced with
mine i wouldnt trust it for Defense . Iam getting a Beretta pretty
quick :)
