Question for a Ruger Gun Smith

My wife and I have identical Ruger Stainless77/22 Long Rifle rifles. We bought them between 1986 and 1989. Both rifles have front and rear sights.
My wife wants the front sight removed but, does not know how it was put on. Can a Ruger gun smith tell me how to remove the sight without cutting off the barrel?
How much would it cost to just buy another 77/22, without sights?
Help. Please.

It's a simple dovetail blade - drive it out from left to right with a drift and hammer. You will be left with the enlarged end of the barrel, with an empty dovetail slot, which will look pretty ugly.

Another barrel

Why not buy another barrel, if the empty dovetail is undesireable? Very easy to replace on the 77/22s. Midway offers replacements (a total of 40 barrels for .22LR, .22WMR, .17HM2, and .17HMR) by Green Mountain, Volquartsen (sp?), Hart, and others, in factory and heavy barrel contours. Prices run from $105 up to $400. You can also get one in .17 Hornady Mach 2 and use your current 77/22 magazines.

Brownells sells dovetail blanks. If one doesn't like the looks, the blank can be carefully filed down to barrel contour and a little cold blue used to darken the bare metal.

I would buy another barrel and possibly sell the one on it to make up some on the purchase. Barrel is easy to change out, just need hex wrench to change out the barrel.

Sir:
If you have a machinist in your area just unscrew the bbl. holding block and have him turn the boss off at the muzzle of the bbl, If he used a center in the muzzle, also have him put a "target crown" in the bbl. Mount back in your rifle and you've got it done.
After he has broken the rifling with the crown (sharp tool) DO NOT let him touch it again - the microscopic burrs will wear away the first few rounds.

I am not sure if the thought has occurred to you, but if you do not want to go to the hassles of having a smith knock the sight off of the rifle, you could always give Ruger a call and buy a barrel with no sights. 5 minutes with a wrench and you would be good to go.
