Question: Can regular 22 ammunition be used in a 22LR gun?

If there is such thing as a bad question, here's one. Can regular 22 ammunition be used in 22LR pistols/revolvers? Example is an H&R model 929. Thanks.

I'm not sure what the OP means by "regular" .22 ammo.
.22LR has got to be the most common round out there and to me that is the "regular" ammo.

Depends on the gun. As a general rule, most .22 revolvers will shoot .22 short, long or long rifle. Most semi-automatic pistols will only accept LR. The main thing hindering using shorts or longs in semi-autos is the fact that the magazines are designed for a specific length ammo and the actions won't work properly with ammunition that is a different size.

As for the 929, I'm pretty sure that you can use any short, long, or long rifle but not magnums.

I shot everything I could find through my 929 and missed half of everything I shot at.:D

Loved every minute of it.:D

Yes,your H&R will shoot every type of 22 long rifle rimfire round out there.

No centerfire rounds,it ain't made for that.

Is he talking different types of .22 Long Rifle ammunition or is he talking about using .22 Shorts, .22 Long and .22 Long Rifle in the same gun?

The latter depends on the gun.

22 long rifle IS regular 22 ammo by todays standards. I would think that a revolver would shoot relaibly any 22LR, 22long, 22short or even the 22CB caps. Unless it has a separate cylynder like the Ruger single six it won't shoot 22 magnums.

Most 22 guns today are designed around the 22long rifle and most autos will ONLY shoot them reliably. Some manually operated guns such as pumps and levers will shoot long rifle, long and short as will most revolvers.

If in doubt check with the manufacturer.

Before giving a blanket "sure", what do you mean by "regular 22"

I suspect that the OP had assumed that the LR designation indicates that there's some other standardized 22 cartridge that people are referring to when they say '22 ammunition'. This is an easy mistake to make if you're not familiar w/ the range of 22 rimfire cartridges.

An H&R 929 will handle anything that'll fit in it. Go for the .22LR. It's the most powerful, the most common and, thus, the cheapest. Bang away!

Buy a 550 round bulk box of cheap-os for practicing and a box or of CCI Velocitors or Aguila Supermaximums for some real punch.

I love 929s. Cool guns.

Sure. I have a Colt Woodsman that calls for 22 Long Rifle. I even shot 22 short in it, but the shorts didn't have enough umph to cycle the slide.

For what it's worth

I'm no expert, but I've always heard that it's a bad idea because of the possible accumulation of lead shavings and powder residue at the front of the chamber.
I had an old break top revolver which would not chamber a LR cartridge all the way and I always thought that was the problem.

Ah!

In general, maybe it's not a great idea, but it's not an altogether bad idea as long as you add some chamber cleaning to your routine after firing a bunch of them. I've fired a whole lot of .22 Shorts in both a S&W 17 and a Marlin 39A with no adverse effects at all.

It will shoot "All" except the .22Mag. No one ever uses shorts or longs any more. Sure brings back some memories of "good times" as a kid with my Dad in the woods with a his Mossberg bolt action .22 rifle. I still have it by the way. :)

Can't remember the last time I saw .22 shorts or longs anywhere. At one time were sold all over now all I ever see is Long Rifle:)

.22 Shorts

I never shoot .22 Shorts! They are too valuable. In my area during squirrel I can sell boxes of .22 Shorts for $8-10 per box. Yes, I have to hold them for several months, but if I find them at auctions or on the shelf at an old hardware store I buy everyone I can get.

but it's not an altogether bad idea as long as you add some chamber cleaning to your routine after firing a bunch of them.
Mal is dead on...just keep the camber clean. I've fired s/l/and lr in weapons chambered for LR with no problems...just have to make sure you clean the chamber after firing the shorter rounds...or there won't be room for the LR to fully chamber.
