question about twist rate for 270WSM

I have a savage model 12 chambered in 270wsm with what I have measured out to be a 1:12 twist barrel. I am wanting to increase my bullet weight from 130gr to 140 or 150 for mule deer and elk. My question is: Is a 1:12 twist to slow to stabilize a 140 or 150 gr. bullet? am I stuck with the 130's?

According to Savage's website, they provide a 1 in 10" twist rate in their models chambered for the .270 WSM. My two Winchester Model 70's in .270WSM also have a 1 in 10" twist, and they stabilize 150 gr Nosler Ballistic Tips just fine. My newer one, an Ultimate Shadow seems to prefer the 150 gr bullet to the 130 gr version. I suggest trying some 150 gr bullets, you may be pleasantly surprised. I have some 160 gr Nosler Partitions, but haven't tried them yet. But since my Ultimate Shadow loves the 150 Ballistic Tip, I am very confident it will shoot the 160 Partition just fine, too.

Savage usually has fast twist rates, so I would be surprised if you have a 1-12 twist. But even if you do the only way to know for sure is to try it. Formulas and theories are usually pretty accurate, but in the end each gun does its own thing.

I would be very surprised if you couldn't shoot at least the 140s.

I've been interested in the 270 wsm. What cartridge would you compare the recoil to?
