Question about trading for a Handgun

I have a Yugo SKS rifle and a Savage .17 HMR boltaction rifle; that I'm thinking about trading ing for a .45acp. Now the gun dealer is just going to allow $100 for each gun traded. I' looking at the Ruger 345 .45acp, a taurus 24/7 for only $399 and a 1911 clone. I forgot the name brand. Might be a Rock River or Rock Island. But anyways it runs about $400 as well. I have no use for the SKS or the Savage anymore. Just no place to shoot rifles around here anymore. Your thoughts?

ps I have tried to sell both guns reasonable in the local paper no buyers.

You can put them up for sale on gunbroker at no cost to you until you sell. I can understand your dealer's offer prices, but I think you could get considerably more in a private sale. You can also find good buys on gunbroker, I bought my excellent P345 there for $300. If I was more into rifle shooting/reloading rifle cartridges we might work out a trade, but I'm not :(

Good Luck.

I am not going to say the dealer is ripping you off, just that he will make a very, very good profit on the deal. Check the going prices of what you are trading.

Unless you really need the money, I would keep trying to do a private trade/sale.

Gunbroker is really the way to go if you can not generate any interest locally.

I do not fault the guy for wanting to get the guns for as little as he can, after all, he is in business to make money. But, you can do better.

Wow...... He's not doing you any favors on the trade ins. I'd be hard pressed to let either gun go for that price.

Additionally, if I were to get taken for a ride with my trade ins, I'd do it for something other than a 1911 clone, a Ruger or a Taurus.

Just my thoughts.

Good luck.

You're far better off selling your firearms yourself, rather than trading them to a dealer.

At a dealer, you pay retail, while selling to them at well below wholesale.

I.E. You buy a new firearm for $400, but the dealer maybe only paid $275 for it. If you trade it in the next day, they can still buy another from a distributor for $275, and they have to sell your's used.

Chances are, they'll only give you a fraction of what it's worth on the retail market. Maybe $150-$200, and then they'll sell it for $350. That's how they make their money, and it's the nature of their business.

It's not dishonest, IMO; just the nature of their business and how they value and buy their firearms to sell.

If you sold the same firearm to an individual, then you know that firearm NIB will cost them the same $400. If you offer it LNIB at $350, it should sell.

It's easier to just trade them in and let the dealer sell them, but you'll get more for them selling them yourself.

If the dealer was offering a 1911 for $400, he was showing you a Rock Island 1911. Rock River stopped making it's 1911's and they're high quality, collectible, and very expensive.
