Question about Slug Barrel

I was reading some of the other post about Chokes and different barrels..I didn't want to Hijack the thread, so Im posting this question seprately now.

If the the barrel reads 'Deer Slug' on the side and it's a smooth bore barrel with no grooving, what would that translate into shooting Shot? Would it be considered a mod choke or full ..etc..etc..?

Thanks for your replies.:)

Typically, a slug specific smooth-bore barrel has either very little (open) or no (straight) muzzle constriction.

So with very little 'choke' at the end of the muzzle, the shot will be opening up rather quickly?? Maybe good for home defense, but I better get a as close as I can if I am hunting Turkey or pheasant. :)

Yes, with an open choke the shot will have a maximum pattern diameter. An open choke is often selected for HD. Yes, it you're hunting turkeys with an open choke, it's advisable that you get very close. Some say, close enough to hit it up the side of the head with your butt stock.

You're more than welcome.
There's a tried and true method of sharing info: Learn it, do it, teach it.

Yes. Like turkey/pheasant looking up the end of your barrel ;). You want a full or extra full choke for turkey and usually modified or improved cyl. on pheasant.

On what make/model/bbl shotgun is this appearing ???

I'm thinking a BARREL marked "deer slug" will be what is known as "cylinder" choke, or no choke, ie a true one diameter tube. Or......it may be very slightly choked as "improved cylinder" to give some minimal constriction to shot.

Most curious as to what bbl/make/model this marking is appearing on. An old Ithica perhaps??????????

And, were not talking about a choke TUBE for slugs, which are often rifled and I would think, be a disaster w/ shot.

The Shotgun in question with the Slug Barrel is my Winchester model 120 12guage. It says 'Deer Slug' on the side of the barrel. It's a smooth bore with NO rifling iside, but it has adjustable rifle sights on top...so I was wondering in terms of Choke, what this barrel would most closely resemble..ie open or modified?? :)

Can't slugs be used in all shotguns except adjustable chokes?

Generally, yes. The exception being overbored barrels like the Mossberg 835 and the super-full turkey chokes (you could bulge your barrel). The general rule of thumb is that the least restrictive the barrel, the greater the accuracy. That is why these non-choked smoothe-bore barrels were made.

It will most likely be either a Cylinder bore (.000 constriction), or an IC bore (.010 constriction in 12 gauge)

Chances are, it's also a fairly short barrel. My Winchester 1400 had a "deer slug" barrel on it, and it was great for moving through dense woods, because it was so darn short.
