Question about SIG 226

Hi all,

I have come across a used SIG 226 in 9mm. The condition looks very nice, only slight wear on the exterior finish. The barrel looks as new. The dealer tells me only 100 or so rounds through the gun (read: 500 rounds give or take).

My question: This gun has the old style grips, indicating manufacture before 1998 I believe (sorry I don't have the serial # or date of manufacture on hand). Have there been any changes made to the 226 in the last few years that would make me want to buy a new SIG instead? I'm thinking in terms of quality and safety.

Also: Is it possible to replace the old grips with the new style polymer grips? I'm not sure if they are sold anywhere.

I currently own a SIG 239 in 9mm as my CCW piece and love it. This is why I'd like to get a 226.

Thank you all!

If the gun had 500 rounds thru it the bluing would be worn on the barrel where the slide passes over it.
Can't help you on the grips. The date code is stamped on the slide.

If you look under the slide's front end you'll see three proof marks. The two letters tell year of manufacture. See http://www.idsi.net/~cavan/IIIC2q2.html

The major change, at least in P226s disttributed by SIG Arms, is the stainless slide on the new pistols. The traditional stamped slide has given way to the stronger, i oune heavier and more corrosion resistant stainless slide.

You can find factory grips at www.cdnninvestments.com I prefer the old style grips, but that's just me.

As with any used pistol make sure you check it out with care. Check the frame for cracks, the frame rails for excessive wear or gouging, the decocker for functionality, the DA and SA and give it a thorough going over before you buy.

Janvs, you can buy the new style grips directly from SIGArms. I prefer the newer style and have replaced the older grips on an older P220 and P226 with newer grips I acquired directly from SIGArms...Dan in GA
