Question about New York City.

I was wondering, if it would be legal to bring a shotgun cased, and unload into New York City???

No, only if you travel through the city. shotguns and rifles are controlled like handguns, you must have a license.

You are allowed to travel through the city with your gun as long as it is in a locked container but you are not allowed to "stop" anywhre within the city while the gun is in your possession.

Bring a gun into the city and you will be treated worse than a rapist or murderer.

So if I CANNOT Stop anywhere in the City, I can run a red lights then huh? ;)

K80Geoff is incorrect. NYC does not treat long guns and handguns the same, and you are allowed to stop within the city with an unloaded long gun.

A non-resident does not need a license for transportation of long guns through the city. A non-resident may bring an unloaded long gun into NYC, and leave it there for no more than 24 hours.

Here is the actual law:

NYC Administrative Code, § 10-305. Exemptions.

i. (1) Non-residents in transit. Any other provision of this chapter to the contrary notwithstanding, a non-resident of the city of New York who, without a rifle and shotgun permit issued hereunder, enters the city of New York possessing a rifle or shotgun in the course of transit to a destination outside the city of New York, or a non-resident of the city of New York who enters the city of New York possessing an assault weapon in the course of transit to a destination outside the city of New York, shall have a period of twenty-four hours subsequent to such entering to be exempt from penalty under this chapter for the unlawful possession of a rifle, shotgun or assault weapon, provided that such rifle, shotgun or assault weapon shall at all times be unloaded and in a locked case, or locked automobile trunk, and that said non-resident is lawfully in possession of said rifle, shotgun or assault weapon according to the laws of his or her place of residence.

Yeah right! Are you going to trust NYC cops to know this. If they find a gun in your car expect to have problems, even if it is locked up.

The law is designed for people travelling through the city, for instance moving through Kennedy airport.

I have been advised by the PD not to stop while traversing NYC to go upstate to shoot. I have no desire to get caught up in the NYC legal system, and I don't advise anyone out there to try it.

And Rifles and Shotguns are licensed in NYC.

There may well be a difference between what the law is, and how the police, DAs, and courts apply it. But that was not the question, and the information initially given was, in a word, incorrect. That is why I cite the actual law, and not just repeat what I was "advised the PD."

Having been in and around NYC all my life, a shooter since I was a child, and an attorney in NYC (including legal advisor to a gun rights group), my experience is that what happens when a cop spots a cased long gun in a car is highly variable.

And the law has far more day-to-day applicability to the three million or so Long Islanders -- who have a relatively high gun ownership rate -- who must travel through NYC to get off the island, than it does for those "moving through Kennedy airport."

Finally, while rifles and shotguns are licensed in NYC, they are not treated the same as handguns. There are many differences, not the least of which is that there is no 24-hour grace period for possession within the city of a handgun licensed outside of NYC.

I once heard a group suggest boycotting
New york state or even the city.
One biiiiiiiig problem.
Guess where the NRA's new cafe is..
guess where their going to be bringing lots of money into...
all those tax dollars paid to a city where you cant even....
but thats okay as long as the law is enforced Lapierre has no problem with it
after all thats better than new laws where you already have a gun ban.
Right???
