im currently looking to change a mossberg 500 maverick 28in scoped barrel into a home defense weapon. want to change to a 18.5in barrel. what else will i have to change with it?

Remove the magazine plug.

If you ever go hunting again, be sure to put it back. Bevel the ends of the dowel or it can get tangled in the magazine spring. I found this out when my turkey shotgun became a single shot. Fortunately I discovered this while unloading after the shot and it's easy to fix.

Depending on what size mag tube your shotgun has you might be able to switch just the barrel.

If you have a 6-shot (5 in the tube + 1 in the chamber)...you can just swap barrels. If you have an 8-shot (7 in the tube + 1 in the chamber) then you'll need to change the mag tube, action slide, action arms, and forearm to the shorter mag tube.

Your probably better off buying a new 6-shot Maverick with an 18" barrel for the amount of money you'd have to spend on all of the parts and a new barrel...

you can buy an 8 shot maverick new for between $200 and 250.....great gun. or you can buy an 18 1/2" barrel and swap it and you will have a 5 +1 shot defense shotgun. nothing else to do except remove the 3 shot plug.
