Question about Mossberg 100 ATR

Due to a new addition to the family, I am having to scale back on buying a few other rifles. Was wondering if anyone has any thoughts, good or bad for a .30-06 or any caliber for the Mossberg ATR? I haven't heard anything nightmarish like the Remington 710, or 770.
 
We bought an ATR 100 .270 this year for my wife. It was $240 at Walmart. It is an excellent gun. Already killed a deer with it at 150~ yards. The shoots as good as any gun I have shot. People will tell you it doesn't cost enough to be a good gun, but I have never bought into that.
 
Mossberg ATR

I won't be doing alot of shooting, some at the range to kill time and keep the skills up, maybe hunting once a year, didn't know if the cost of one of these outweighs the benefits. Meaning, I don't want to spend $1000.00 on a bolt action for 200-300 yard range when I won't shoot that much.
 
There was a law suit against Mossberg and their ATR rifle a couple of years ago. The bolt came out of one seriously injuring or killing the shooter. The bolt was put together in such a way that the bolt handle could possibly rotate down without engaging the lugs. I don't know if this problem was limited to one rifle that slipped through QC or if it was a design flaw at the time.

Like I said I don't know if Mossberg has fixed this problem or not, but seeing pictures of that bolt in the first link has been enough to steer me away from their rifles.

However, there are other good choices out there as well to include the new Marlin XS7 and XL7 rifles and the Stevens 200. You should be able to find these rifles in your price range and chambering you want. I'm very happy with my Stevens rifle I got for less than $300.
