Question about Mil-Dot range estimating

I've got a question that's been bothering me about mil-dot range estimating. 1 mil is approx. 3.6" at 100 yards. So if you're sizing something up, saying it's 1.6 mils, you can calculate the distance to the target if you know the actual size of the object. My question is, when using the mil-dots, what power should the scope setting be on??? 1.6 mils at 3x is no where near the same as 1.6 mils at 24x. Can someone please explain this to me???

Each scope is different. Some set up to make the mil dot work best on 7 power some are less i know burris uses 7 power on most of their scopes. Main thing you need to do is call the company that makes your scope and find out from them. General rule of thumb is to set it about mid power. Best mill dot is a fixed power that way you dont have a prolem with where the adjustment is. Id say set it where the factory tells you and leave it dont mess with raising and lowering that way you get used to it and your on every time. Impact guns has a training program for using mill dot that teaches you to calculate for wind and trajectory as well as judging mills. Other good info is what the size of something is in a general use like a male in prone position is on average 42 inches sholder to sholder. Hope this helps.

good idea....im probably going to set up a ruler or something at 100 yards and visually measure the mil dots through the scope to know for sure.
