Question about ID of a Chinese SKS and it's value

Ok, so my friends neighbor (92 years young) died and had a few guns lying around that his wife (91 herself) wants him to sell for her. One of them is a chinese SKS but some parts of it puzzle me...

It doesn't have a factory marking on it, but it does have the "type-56" written on the side in chinese. It also has a 30 round detachable magazine and a bipod.

The lady has no clue what it's worth (I realize most SKSs are $250-400 these days) or what original and what isn't.

Two questions: Can anyone tell me when it was made or what it's worth? I'm debating buying it... Thanks.

Lots of those were imported in the late 1980s before George HW Bush stopped their importation.

The price depends on whether it takes AK magazines or the awful aftermarket "duckbill" magazines.

The former would run $350+ while the later would run $200 because you will need to replace the aftermarket magazine with the factory fixed 10 rounder to get it to function without jamming.

The top cover scope mount is useless as it will lose zero within the first couple shots. I'd bush the cover mount (i.e. throw it in the bushes) and replace it with a standard cover.

Looks like a nice rifle, at least the serial numbers match on the receiver and bolt, that's a good sign. Need to check the stock and barrel for their serial number as well, if all the same I would say buy. She will need to find the original magazine (10 round) internal mag. And bayonet to put it back to C&R condition. 30 round mags not allowed unless 7 other american parts have been changed as well. Google the internet for C&R rifle info.

Looks like at least a $250 rifle.

The muzzle break is after market... It is a ak 74 style muzzle break... The sks have 7 serial numbers around the entire rifle .. One on the original mag, on the trigger guard, stock, barrel, receiver, bolt, and receiver top dust cover... If they all match then they are worth a lil more..

-Its a chinese SKS.
-It was never a C&R and can't be made a C&R. EVER.
-It has had the original receiver cover replaced with an aftermarket cover so it can't be a matching number gun unless the original part is found somewhere.
-It takes standard SKS mags, not AK mags
-it is missing a mag
- it has an aftermarket pin on AK74 style muzzle brake attached
- It appears to be a 16" barrel "paratrooper" model
- it has a 1" rubber spacer/recoil pad installed
-It has a bipod installed on the bayonet lug

If the original parts can be found to return it to original condition it is worth about $350. "As is" it is worth about $225

…..you will need to replace the aftermarket magazine with the factory fixed 10 rounder to get it to function without jamming.

About 15 years ago I had a Chinese SKS with aftermarket detachable mags. 20, 30 and 50 round. Thousands upon thousands of rounds down the tube using those mags, and I do not remember one malfunction. Not one. I was stupid and sold the thing…..

Thanks for the info guys. A little more info for you--the stock has no markings at all on it but is in perfect condition, leading me to believe it is aftermarket. I can't ask the lady any question because she has no clue about the weapon..

If it's a D or M model that takes AK mags, you should be able to clear $450 without hardly trying.
If you work hard and find a desperate tin-hatter, maybe $600.

It is obviously not a D or M. Look at the picture!

If you don't know enough to recognize the obviously different mag release you aren't knowledgeable enough about the SKS to comment on the rifle intelligently.

For one , you can't tell that is a norinco stock by the pictures.. you can clearly see the sks mag release. You can see that the stock is either been replaced or refinished.. It looks to good .. Oh and the guy on post 9 simply said that if it was a model d or m and took ak mags it was worth more.. I don't think he said that it was a model d or m. Maybe you should read a lil better before writing of intelligence.. You probably don't even know what norinco stands for...

The large open grain softwood and orange varnish is unique to Norincos. It's an original norinco stock.

I suspect that the original owner didn't shoot the rifle much or just took exceptional care of it. I have two Norinco SKSs in the same condition.

Two different posts speculated that it might be a D or M, the second one after I catagorically stated that it was NOT a D or M.
