question about gun permit in NJ?

Hello,

As you know, I am a beginner and new here and have posted my first
message a few days ago and received great advice so far...thank you!

So, I have another question about the permit process in the state of NJ,
if anyone is familiar with it.

I will be going to my local police station to pick up the application for a
handgun permit. I was told it takes about 6-8 weeks for approval.

So my question is once I have my permit in hand and I go to my local
gun shop, is there a next step where I have to show proof of
training, or am I free now to purchase my handgun with my approved
permit?

Haven't lived there for 20 years. The way it used to be you got your firearms ID card. That enabled you to buy a long gun and to apply to your local town's police station for a handgun permit. Once you got the permit you could go buy the handgun anywhere in the state. Locked in the trunk empty was okay, loaded was not IIRC. Glad I haven't been back in 20 years. Good luck with it.

I will only be here for one more year then moving to New Mexico- FREEDOM.
anyway back to you question. Get the gun laws like other person said and Read them. You are dealing with people that think we have no right to own firearms and that they can do what ever they want with permits. The law states 30 days for all permits, nothing comes up on applacition the permit has to be issued but that never happens. When you apply for handgun permit go and order or buy your handgun then, gun shop will hold it, they know the process. Permits are good for 90 days from date approved not the date you pick them up so check they date and if it was sitting around say something to cop. It aint fun and dont ever think about ccw permits in PRNJ.
Good luck

Nodule,

I have lived in NJ my whole life, except for 4 years of Chiropractic school. Forget about the 6-8 weeks for approval. That is extremely optimistic! Think about if you might purchase another gun or two in the near future. The mental health check and state police check is up to your local police chief. What this means is if he wants one every time you apply for a permit, he can make you fork over $18.50 every time you want a permit.

Since a NJ permit is only good for 90 days (you can get one 90 day extension) and you can only register a handgun once every 30 days, you might as well wait till you have 3-4 handguns in your sights and get 3-4 permits. Don't forget you can buy guns in advance and have them held at your local store or a gunsmith with an FFL (Federal Firearms License).

Also you can buy a gun from a NJ resident without going thru the state police. The seller just has to take your information for his protection. You hands over your money and you are good to go. Buying a handgun across state lines is serious business and must go thru some with an FFL. Buying long guns is much easier. Just show your NJ ID to the sales clerk, pick out the one you want and pay for it.

So my question is once I have my permit in hand and I go to my local
gun shop, is there a next step where I have to show proof of
training, or am I free now to purchase my handgun with my approved
permit?

Once you have the permit to purchase you are done. All that is required after that is the instant NICS check at the gun store when you buy your handgun.

Just remember that it is a permit to purchase, NOT to carry.
