Question about duty guns of Ca Highway Patrol

Hi, just a trivia question. Talked to a guy who said he was a CA Highway Patrol Officer (I think he was lying). He said his duty weapon was a .45 and that the CHP did issue .45's (couldn't tell me which model) in the eighties before they went to the .40 S&W 4006. It has always been my understanding that they issued the S&W M19 .357 and then went to the S&W 4006 immediately after, not even touching the .45 cal. Am I right?

To the best of my knowledge you're correct.

"Get yourself a Lorcin and lose that nickel plated sissy pistol."

My sister is retired CHP. My brother-in-law is a CHP firearms instructor.

Current issue weapons are: S&W 4006 with bobbed hammer for patrol officers and S&W 4013 for investigators.

Never heard of CHP being issued .45 ACP. If I remember correctly CHP went from .38 +P directly to .40 S&W.

The guy was full of it. The CHP has never issued a pistol in .45

Yup, I thought I was right. Boy did he leave in a hurry when I started with the questions. He got all nervous when I told him I was currently in backgrounds with CHP. Thanks again guys.

SHawn Dodson is correct, the CHP went from wheel-gun directly to the S/W .40cal. I am not sure, but i think they issued a S/W 15, a K-frame .38spl, with adjustable sight. Anything else carried was troopers own weapon. To the best of my knowledge, no dept. will ISSUE a .357mag, or anything lager than a K-frame, or comparable. This is due largely to liability, and the fact that most depts. ISSUE only .38spl ammo. The S/W model 28 is an N-frame, the same as the .44mag 29/629 series. ALL dept. owned pistol ranges will not allow any magnum rounds, of any caliber, mostly due to insurance reasons, and partly due to worries about the backstop.
