Question about different grains of ammo and POI

So I'm a lot more familiar with a rifle but I know with a rifle if you change grains of ammo without adjusting your scope you often aren't even on the target anymore. Is it the same with handguns? The reason I ask is most pratice ammo I see at Walmart and what not is a different grain than most hollow point rounds you would carry. It seems like a lot of handguns also have fixed sights so you can't adjust them for this. Is it not a big deal with handguns or is it a problem?

Adjusting the load of a firearm will inevitably change the Point of impact. With a handgun the results could be less noticeable but if you are going to use it for self defense you should know your point of impact and know the hold-off if the sights are non adjustable.

Buy some different ammo, go to the range and do some tests !

Tests are fun:D

Typical self defense distances being out to the magic "21 feet" the change of impact would be like 1/4" give or take. I would have no hesitation practicing with ball and loading with hollow points for carry. Most of us wouldn't even notice the difference in point of impact changes from one type of ammo to another at "21 Feet."

well, the thing about handguns is unless you have adjustable sights, your kinda stuck with the bullet hitting higher or lower

now i cant say for different grain target loads, but when it comes to practicing using target loads at self defense ranges, and the difference in POI at SD ranges with SD rounds, its negligible

as for the difference between target loads and SD loads at 25 yards, you're gonna have a hard time convincing a prosecutor that you were defending yourself at 25 yards
