Question about buying a gun in CA

Hi everyone...I have a question regarding purchasing a hangun in california. I am 21 years old, but still living with parents. I was told that, in order to buy a handgun, I would need proof of residence (clerk said cell phone bill, bank statements, etc were not enough, and I would need something like a utility bill). My question is, is there any way around this since I live with my parents and I do not have any utilities, etc billed to my name.

What do I have to do? Anyone with any info, please help.

I'll look into the car registration thing.

Funny thing is that I contacted the ATF (apparently now its the BATFE) via e-mail to ask about this and never got a response. Maybe they justg don't like me.

Car registration can work. Technically it has to have been issued within the previous six months to be valid. Some guns stores obey the letter of the law. However, when I was living in Kal, some gun stores accepted the car registration regardless of when it was issued. Check with your gun store.

Proof of residence can also be a notarized statement from one of your parents that you live at their residence address. This takes the place of a lease or rental agreement.

Well, thanks for the responses...I think I'm actually gonna hold off buying for a while - can't decide what I want. So many choices, so little money.

No need to hold off. Go to an office supply store and pick up a rental agreement. Fill it out and sign it.

None of the bills are in my name so I typed one up on word and had the wife sign it. Got me glock.

I just meant because I can't make up my mind.

I really like the Taurus Millenium Pro, but considering that I would be doing mostly range shooting (unless of course I have to use it for self defense at home), I think the small size would make it too much of a challenge to shoot.

So now I'm back to square one...lots of guns I like, but most of them being out of my price range.

Personally, I think this requirement for secondary information is not only a harassement of gun purchasers but patently illegal.

One is required by DMV to submit a change of address form within 10 days of moving to a new location. The DMV issued state-id/DL card is required to obtain state medicaid, welfare and other benefits. It is also used by LEOs as an official form of ID. TSA and the FAA require you to present a state issued ID card before flying.

However, in order to exercise your rights you are asked to provide another proof of residency, such as a utility bill -- a document not issued by a government agency. Some persons, such as yourself, may not be able to provide such documents. Consider a young, single mother living with friends or her boyfriend -- the utilities are in his name, she doesn't own a car, have a rental/lease agreement in her name and may even have a PO Box for her bills due to her living situation. The state will not permit her to purchase a firearm, thus denying her rights under the 2nd Amendment.

It's yet another "gun control" scheme to keep guns out of the hands of the poor and to harrass those intending to legally purchase a firearm.
