question about berrel length for slugs

I got drawn for my first slug deer hunt and and need some info. I have never hunted with slugs before. I have a remington 870 with a 3 inch chamber. It came with a 28 inch barrel, but I also have a 20 in that I use for varmint hunting. they are both smooth bore, and Im using winchester rifled slugs. which one of my barrels should give the best accuracy? will the 20 inch be just as good as the 28in?
Thanks!

IT will be about as accurate either way, however, YOU will most likely be more accurate with the longer barrel, due to sight radius. Smaller aim, smaller miss.

I have an 870 Wingmaster and I deer hunt with it every year. I always use my slug barrel, 20''. I tried shooting out of my 30'' bird barrel and was pretty unhappy with the results. I shoot Slugger High Velocity and can put them all (5) in a 3-4 inch ring at 50 yards though most of my shooting is 25 yards and less.

I've always been told that rifled slugs shoot best out of shorter barrels. And IMHO I believe it's true.

Could be either. As previously mentioned, the longer sight radious may help you but don't discount the short barrel. Shotgun barrels can be very temperamental when it comes to slugs. You may find that one barrel shoots a particular flavor of slug just fine but the other barrel scatters them all over the target. Get 3 or 4 different brands of slugs and hit the range. That will tell you which slug to use and which barrel to use it with. It will also tell you what that barrel's point-of-impact is in relation to its point-of-aim.

/\ /\ This. Agreed - different brand slugs will yield different results - your barrel will perform better with one brand and not so well with others.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and assume that the 20" barrel came equipped with rifle sights and the 28" barrel came equipped with a vent rib and bead.

If that's the case you'll likely be more accurate with the 20" rifle sight equpped barrel, unless you want to invest in some clamp-on-rib rifle sights for the longer barrel.

thanks for all of your help everyone....I also have a bushnell shotgun scope I plan on using, so I believe Im going to try the 20in first.

I am nearly equally as accurate with a smoothbore 24 inch barrel as an 18 inch smooth barrel.

I do not use rifled barrels and sabot slugs because I cannot justify the expense to own and practice with them.

I am confident at 65 yards and could stretch it to 80 with feelin' guilty for tryin' a shot I am not able to make.

But at 65 yards... if it stands still or walks slow... I will but a glob of plumbum right in the boiler room.

Since the vastest of my hunt opportunity puts me in dense woods, I can get more shot opportunities with the short gun.
