Question about AIR RIFLES...

How powerful are your average air rifles? can they also kill someone or/and something as well? are they good for self defence?

I'm no expert, but I believe the top o the line air rifles boost the projectile up to about 500fps...not sure if this is applicable to the .22 caliber ones.

Can they kill someone? With a well placed shot and appropriate range, yes...even BB guns have done so.
Self defense? Better than nothing if you are good, but I don't know if the most powerful aren't semi-auto. They are major fun to plink with, but I wouldn't buy one if self-defense is a major criterium.

No, I wouldn't use one for self-defense. But yes, if you're careless enough to shoot someone with one it can be lethal. A little boy shot and killed another child not long after the shooting in Detroit with nothing but a pellet gun, I think it was in Alabama.

Airguns would not be my first choice for self defense. Mind you, if it was all I had, I'd use it and the Farco airshotgun (shoots a .433 cal lead ball) is nothing to laugh at.

Where are those Austrian air rifles of Napoleonic times when we need them?

Welcome to TFL Misko,

I have numerous high-end airguns (exceeding $1000 each) and some are capable of pumping out lead at over 1000 feet per second. That’s faster that a .22 long rifle.

I wouldn’t consider using one for self-defense, although early models (around the turn of the century) were popular among the “gentleman class”. There were large bore air pistols and air powered “cane guns”.

Would a modern airgun kill? With correct shot placement, you bet it will.

Airguns are very popular in the UK, due to the heavy legislation on firearms. People use them to hunt small game for food or varmint control. I think they are limited to something like 12-15 foot pounds of energy.

An interesting side note is that airgun silencers are popular and widely used in the UK.

As far as the Austrian air rifles mentioned by 4V50 Gary, Napoleon had standing orders to his troops to KILL any opponents found with one. These air rifles were large bore and could kill a man at distance. “Snipers” were not looked upon with any favor back then and were considered cowards.

air rifles that do not use a nitrogen cylinder range from about 400Fps to 1150Fps....
I have a czech that is a single stroke .177 at 450Fps and a chink that is a single stroke .177 at 850Fps... the son has two germans ... one .177 at 1175Fps and a .22 at 980Fps....
there are more powerful one out there... and some cost as much as a good 700BDL....

I've heard about these Naepoleonic Air Rifles before and I'm having a hard time visualizing these.

Anyone know where I might see a picture of one?

Last year I bought a BSA Supersport in .177. This is a barrel break single pump air rifle firing the .177 pellet at about 1050fps. The .22 version shoots at 800fps, the .25 at 600fps. All 3 deliver between 22 and 25 foot/lbs energy.

I paid $189 for mine. It has adjustable sights and an integrated scope base (which I don't use). The trigger is incredibly crisp. The gun is more accurate than I am.

I was greatly impressed with the overall quality of fit and finish. The stock is just beautiful.

I can easily recommend this gun.

BTW: if you buy a rifle and put a scope on it, make sure you buy an air rifle scope. Air rifles have a different kind of recoil than cartridge rifles. Regular scopes don't work all that well on them.

Misko, welcome to TFL!

Here's so more info on airgun history: http://www.beeman.com/history.htm

And, get hold of a Beeman catalog if you can - I was surprised how much info was in there. This is a much more sophisticated (and, expensive) field than I originally imagined. Expensive air rifles can be very, very accurate, and they should be treated like firearms when it comes to safety.

W.H.B. Smith (author of Small Arms of the World) also wrote a book on Air Guns. In it is a photograph and description of the Austrian military airgun. You may want to check your library.

I shoot an old Benjiman .22 air rifle that ive had since i was 11 (I'm 32 now). I use it to hunt squirrels when im in the mood. It claims to shoot at approx. 800 fps with 10 pumps...Ive managed to even get a rabbit or 2 over the years, try it sometimes, its an absolute blast to use squirrel hunting!
