Question about a rifle I inherited. Savage 340A bolt action 30-30

Hello,

I inherited this rifle from a dead relative recently (Savage Arms 340A bolt action 30-30) from someone in the family who passed away. I'm fairly new to firearms and recently got a gun license but I was curious at exactly what type of ammunition this rifle takes.

I asked the person who handed it over if it was standard 30-30 Winchester rounds, and he said no. Now as I said, I am fairly new to guns so I don't know how many different types of 30-30 there are (if that even makes any sense) or if any 30-30 Winchester will be fine?
 
.30-30 Winchester is what you'll want to shoot. Try some Hornady Leverevolution in it, my bolt action rifle shoots tiny groups at 100 yards with it. Fun little rifle you have there, and welcome aboard the TFL.

Second - if you haven't either already done so, or aren't ex-military, please consider sitting through a firearms safety course (usually free - check with your state's Dept Fish & Game), to better enjoy your inheritance in safety.

The Savage really shines with a scope sight, so if it doesn't already have one mounted I would suggest you consider one, up to about 4x (in a fixed power scope) or a 1x-3x variable power scope - given the effective range limitations of the .30-30 (about 200-250yds).

One we had in our family was a tack driver. Clip takes standard 30-30 plus pointy reloads. Early 30-30s were not tapped for a scope. Some side mounts limit scope selection. A Hubble telescope may interfere with the bolt travel.
