Question about 30-30 ammo!

I just bought some ammo for my 94 30-30. Havent bought ammo for it in a long time, and did not even think to check bullet type. I bought Winchester Power Max hollow points (cheapest, as Im just target shooting with some friends). Just wondering...is that safe to use? I know I should be using a flat tip bullet, and Im wondering if its worth the risk using these rounds??

If you bought factory .30-30 ammunition it is safe to use in your rifle. More than likely your ammunition is using flat hollow point bullets so there isn't anyway to set off the primer. I wouldn't use those bullets for anything other than varmints and paper punching, as I don't think they would perform well on deer sized game.

Well they aren't FHP bullets like the Sierras I load, but the are similar to a round nose in shape. You'll be fine running them in your .30-30, trust me Winchester's lawyers aren't going to sell you anything unsafe to run in a tube magazine. If they do there will be disclaimers all over the box like Remington does with the .35 Rem running the single shot pistol bullet.

Thanks for the fast reply! Im just using them for targets. Figured they SHOULD be safe, but I wanted to make sure! Thanks again!

i would be cautious using the bullets pictured in a 94.
I load 110jhp for my marlin. I single load One in chamber and one in magazine.

If in doubt, and you want to shoot them in "practice" why not single load them, that certainly wouldn't hurt anything. Still good practice and no chance of the points setting off another round if there isnt another round to set off.

Load one round in the magazine rack the lever and take your shot, before racking the lever again, load your second round in the magazine, and then rack the lever to eject the first and load the second, just as if the magazine were full. Unless your planning on speed shooting that will be the ticket, and if your set on speed shooting, go get some remington core-lokt for 15 bucks at the wally world.

From the looks of them ,I would load 1 in the chamber and 1 in the mag while hunting. Looks like a full mag of those might cause a problem .

thats the same load i use in my 94 its a good cartridge and perfectly safe for tubular magazines. The case is even crimped for use in a lever gun.

I dont really see anything wrong with them I would load the magazine full and shoot as normal, guess I just dont see it being possible to set off another round in the magazine especially with a blunt hollow point and i did look at the pics.

Agreed, what is the problem people are having with these? It's factory loaded stuff with a blunt nosed projectile like has been used for over 100 years in the 30-30.

ELWray:

I have a 25-35 model 94 Winchester and a model 94 Classic 30-30. In both rifles I shoot single loaded spitzer bullets with good results. However, neither gun will take a pointed bullet in its magazine. The magazine spring plunger is rounded and the pointed bullets try to enter the magazine at an angle and they won't load.

I doubt seriously a company like Winchester, who designed the cartride, and built millions of tube feed guns, would build unsafe ammo. Much worrying about nothing in my view.

30-30 Win 150gr Hollow Points are tube safe, and own the longest unbroken streak of clean single shot kills in my friends and family circle, including some of the largest buck you can hope to shoot in Penns woods. Only twice have we recovered spent bullets under the far side skin. Usually they exit, but well spent. Only reason I reload Hornady FTX and Nosler's is Mr Winchester doesn't sell them to reloaders.
