Question about 22 Magnum

How does the .22 Magnum fired from one of the little NAA revolvers compare to say a standard .38 Special? Would anyone consider the .22 Magnum to be an effective defense round? If not, then what would be a good alternative revolver (auto) about the same size? Derringer maybe?

IIRC, the 22 mag is compareable (on paper) to standard pressure 38 special loadings. I used to have a NAA 22 mag and the thing I didn't like about it was that it would stand up in my hand when shot.

You'd probably be better off with a 38. If you do have a NAA and (God forbid) have to use it, screw it in their ear first so they get that big ball of expanding gases too.

i have a 1" .22 mag with the full rubber grip and controllability isnt an issue with this grip. naa's wbsite claims 1000+ fps out of the 1" with 30 grainers.

A gentleman named Bill Jordan considered the .22 Magnum in a J-frame Smith a better concealed carry weapon than the .38 Special. S&W made up a 3" version on the J-frame with fixed and adjustable sights. Models 650 / 651 as I recall. I saw them in magazines, but never met one in person.

Who isn't trading off his M-38 any time soon.

Can you point me to this article where Bill Jordan actually mentions this? Is it better because of size and portability or xfer of energy?

It's a marginally decent defense round, but not from an NAA mini-rev, IMO. Those are neat toys, and well built, but they're so small that their handling charactistics and sight radius, etc., lead to very bad accuracy, slow follow up shots, and extremely loud blast and flash for very little return in performance out of that tiny barrel. UNLESS you get one of the black widow ones (or whatever they're called) that have a 4" ish barrel and the larger rubber grip - those are decent defense guns, I suppose, albeit single action only. You'd be much better off defending yourself with a knife than one of the 1 or 2" bbled mini-revs with the tiny grips.

Ninjato, I recall Mr. Jordan "wishing" for a J-framed snub in .22 WMR in his book "No Second Place Winner." It has (shamefully) been a l-o-o-n-g time since I re-read hte book, but I believe he liked the velocity of the small bullet, the lack of recoil (affording less flinch & faster firing) and (possibly??) the ability to increase the ammo capacity (8 or 9 rounds; the more the merrier!).

Again, this reply is based on a failing memory, so . . .Gotta pull this back off the bookshelf!
