Quantrill's raid - the history channel

I notice there will be a show in a few minutes ( 7 p.m. central) on this Civil War raid on Lawrence, Kansas.

It will be interesting to see if they mention one fact often omitted: the Lawrence, Kansas city council had just passed a gun control ordinance, disarming the citizens. Quantrill raided soon after, killing many of the citizens, but usually retreating when anyone had a gun.

Sorry to say that the impression all these "experts" gave were that anyone who even presumed to resist were shot down. As if the raiders were these invincible god like monsters of the battlefield instead of just men who would bleed just as red as you or I if an organized resistance was mounted against them.
No mention AT ALL of the Laurence KS firearms ban even though they made it seem that it wouldn't have mattered anyway, as anyone who fought back was smote down by the unstoppable, "bulletproof" raiders.

All the same it was an interesting piece.

Too bad the pap dispensers don't do a story about the Northfield, Minn. incident where the ARMED citizens shot the living hell out of the James, Younger, & Dalton gang, reputed to be the most feared desparados of that time.

Oh well..... J.B.

Actually Jay they have done one on that.. And they pointed out that is was the pople and not law enfovcement that did it.

Jay Baker,
I don't believe that the James brothers or the Younger brothers was involved in the Northfield, Minn raid. That raid was attempted by the Daltons and they got their butt shot off.

Take care. :)

Yes, the special was silent about it, but the raiders did actually leave a few people alone who were armed.

The James, Younger gang were the ones involved in the Northfield MN raid. The James both escaped.
The Dalton gang met their end in Coffeeville KS many years later.
What I disliked about the History Channels Quantrill raid was the fact that there was no mention of the butchery that the Redlegs had committed on the Missouri side of the border as well. But then being a Missoura boy and a southerner I would feel that way. :D

All of that aside the History Channel is one of our greatest (only) allies on television. Not to mention they are one of the few places on television with intellectual programing to stimulate the mind. Hmmm....I wonder if the two are related. :)
