Quality over quantity over time

There is a current thread running and I didn’t want to hijack that, so here is my twist on this. Over time with all prices adjusted to current market prices (a purchase of 50 years ago would be adjusted to today’s price, if it is no longer in production a substitute with the same features and quality to the best of your ability). How do they hold up? Do the cheap guns gain any value and do they continue to work without more than reasonable care? How about the expensive ones do they do any better? Also at the end of your collecting how many stand your test of time and why? Would you trade your cheaper ones for more expensive ones or vice versa?

I think for myself the actions of the past week says it all. I traded a Glock 17 for a Browning Hi Power, I believe it to be an upgrade. I am not bashing Glock it’s a great pistol and only the second time any of my firearms have been traded in over 30 years of collecting.

Myself.. I'm not as worried about the collection value later on down the road. I'm more interested in if I like it or not. The only gun I have traded/sold was a Beretta I had for store credit and got a Taurus. I know it sound like I am downgrading, I hated the Beretta and love the Taurus. So for me it was a good trade.

In answer to your question I'm sure the higher value guns appreciate at a greater rate (if at all). In the scenario you provide with the Glock trade for the BHP, you definitely got the better deal. I feel like the BHP will always be more valuable, at least for the base material it is constructed with. Yeah that Glock is going to run for what seems like forever, but so will the BHP. Also, although there are tons of fanbois for the Glock I feel like the BHP is put at much greater esteem by those who know.

Yes, i think the higher end guns will be worth more later (their value will go up quicker) given the same variables as the lower end guns.

Depends on how cheap you are talking if they will last. Saturday night specials such as Lorcins and what not.. no.... Kel Tecs, yeah quite possibly, but the wear on them will be more pronounced.

I have never completely accepted the "you get what you pay for" idea. Probably true most of the time, but there are exceptions. I own Colt, S&W, Springfield and Ruger handguns. I have also owned Bersa & Taurus in the past.

My first Ruger was the .22 Standard for $37.50 (yes I am that old). My other Rugers like my Speed Six, GP100, P90, Mini 14, and LC9 were very reasonably priced. I would put their reliability and gain in price up against any firearm I own.

And I should say one of the most reliable handguns I ever owned was a WWII Remington Rand 1911 I purchased for $40.00.

So, low cost guns can hold their own against higher priced guns, but I will say your overall chances are better with the higher priced guns.
