Hey ya'll.

Lookin to pick up a decent AK to go along with my M4. I previously had a WASR, and don't want another one of those.

Just wondering what some of the options are for a decent AK without spending a small fortune.

Thanks.

Arsenal SGL21 for a 7.62x39 AK-47

Arsenal SGL31 for a 5.45x39 AK-74

When I finally get an AK, I will only consider Arsenal. They seem to be a consistently quality outfit.

If you want the best, find a Valmet. They are Finnish AK-47's, kissing cousins to the Galil and South African R-4, and are heads and shoulders better than any of the comblok AK's. Worth looking for. Available in 7.62 x 39 and 5.56mm.

A Saiga, while not American made, is made in the Izhvek factory and is made to the same military standards that actual Russian AKs were made to (minus the milled receiver). They come with chrome plated bores and everything is put together quite well.

I owned a converted Saiga in 7.62x39 and a converted Saiga in .223Rem. Both functioned beautifully and of all the guns I've sold off these are two rifles I regret having gotten rid of the most. The 7.62 was more accurate than any AK chambered in that caliber prior. The .223Rem was even more accurate and while not a tack driver it was superbly accurate for an AK. The factory triggers were gritty, creepy and hard but they were still better than the stock triggers on a lot of other AK rifles to be found.

In my mind just as high quality as an Arsenal maybe even higher quality depending on what parts you used to do the conversion. The other thing is that YOU get to do the conversion and it was your effort and energy that were put into making it what it is.

Trust me nothing endears a gun more to you than being able to make it into what it is with your own hands, even if it is just a conversion.

Saigas aside go with an Arsenal AK or else find yourself a preban Norinco or Polytech.

Valmets are technically an AK. While its based off the AK the action and internals have been changed and as you say they are closer to the Galil than an AK. I agree though they're far better than any European AK you can get your hands on aside from the older Russian AKs. Nonetheless they're still technically not an AK.

First, Arsenals are converted Saigas (which are made by Izhmash, the company that makes Russia's AKs). Arsenal does some upgrades to the internals but they're minimal in my opinion. They also put Kvar furniture on the gun which is very nice synthetic AK furniture FWIW... A properly converted Saiga is pretty much an Arsenal. But, I love my SGL-21 and would buy it again. For under $1000, tough to beat.

Arsenal Milled AK's are the best US made AK. For stamped, I'd look for one built on a 1.5mm receiver with good quality polish parts, numbers matching & with the chrome lined barrel (no crappy US barrel)

I will admit some wasrs arent assmbled as carefully as others but I am on my second one and have had zero problems with either one.

I have never been an AK fan. Kid Colt (yes that is his name) of Ghost Town GM (ghosttowngm@yahoo.com)in Show Low AZ has almost convinced me to get one.

I tryed one of his builds and found them to be accurate with a trigger pull as good as my match M-1 Garand.

Whats the approximate value of a converted 7.62 saiga?

That depends on what you're willing to pay for it. :p

Seriously though you can google the cost of a 7.62x39 Saiga and the cost of the parts to do the conversion. That's all pretty easy to figure out. The hard part is what the person who did the conversion believes his/her handiwork is worth.

Best thing to do is to buy the gun and the parts and do the conversion yourself. Its not extremely hard to do.

Saiga of course is the bomb....

Alth0ough I have a Zastava PAP (Serbian AK) and its just so awesome I want to tuck it on my pillow and sleep with it for snugglesafetyu.

If you're considering doing a Saiga conversion, they have started importing the 5.45x39 guns with the business end of the gun already converted. You have to look for them but they're out there. That'll save you the money of getting the new gas block/site. You'll still have to get the 74 brake, stock, pistol grip, and trigger assembly...
