Q For Folks Who Replaced Sights W Adjustables

For those of you who have replaced your rear sights with an adjustable version-has it really helped you sight better in target competitions? I just ordered a LPU adjustable rear sight for my 3rd gen S&W 4566 in hopes that it will make accurate target acquisition much easier...hoping other folks have done this with good results.

Thanks for any experience you can share!

I shot a gun with adjustables for years, but when I chose sights for a new gun, went with fixed. After zeroing the adjustables, I never touched them again, for years. If you change loads a lot, with different bullet weights, and have to hit smallish targets out to 50 yards or more, then adjustables are probably necessary, but I shoot the same bullet at the same target, almost always within point blank range, and once the gun is on, it's more likely that an adjustable will break, than it will need adjusting.

I agree with Rick. I have several that came with adjustable sights and once I got them adjusted to me, I've never touched them again.

I prefer adjustables whenever they are practical-which is almost always, unless you have to draw from a pocket or from "deep cover" when snagging higher profile sights become an issue. I do a lot of Bullseye shooting, where a clear sight picture is paramount, and hunt, where it's not uncommon to have to adjust the sights to accomodate different bullet weights and/or while working up reloads in terms of matching the poa with the poi, with my handguns; so having adjustable sights makes a lot of sense for my purposes.

It depends on what the gun is going to be used for. My carry guns have sometimes had fixed and sometimes adjustable sights. Lately, I carry an XDm 9mm with a JPoint on it.

The gun I use for Limited class is a CZ75 SA with the factory fixed target sight.

My Steel Challenge .22 has a Volquartsen adjustable.

My Glocks and my XD .45 have TFO fixed sights.

Sometimes you need adjustable sights and sometimes you don’t.

LPU? Did you mean LPA?

I replaced the standard rear sight on a 1911 with an LPA adjustable a few years ago. I took it off about three months later and it's on a shelf in a cabinet somewhere near the workbench ... I think.

An adjustable sight doesn't help target acquisition, unless your fixed sights are terrible. An adjustable corrects parallax (and for ammunition) so that point of impact coincides with point of aim.

Whoops-yes, an LPA. My fixed sights are off, so the purpose of replacement was to get me back on target with my favorite gun.

Absolutely I would go with an adjustable - but it would depend on the gun's purpose. I have them on my IDPA gun, a CZ 75 SA Target, my Kimber Gold Match II, Custom Classic Target, and a couple others. I also have fixed sights on a few. If I cant get a gun of mine to hit POA/POI like I want, then it gets adjusted. Either with an adjustable or changing heights of the sight. My carry guns have fixed sights, and my target/range/comp guns have adjustable.

I think every gun in the WORLD should come with adjustable sights. Or at least a lot more of them than do. I also adjust the sights only once in a blue moon, but having the ability to make that adjustment is important to me. I already have to remember how to optimally grip each of my pistols and how each different trigger breaks; I'd rather not also have to remember where to aim in order to make POI = the center of the target. E.g. "Oh yeah, this one requires a 6 o'clock hold on a 4" target at 15 yards, but this other one shoots a little to the left unless you are at 7 yards, where the error is negligible..." :barf::barf::barf:

I try to make all my rear sight notches at least .145" wide; I try to make at least a .040" bright spot on my front blades.
I use numerous front sight brightening methods.
