A DA Ruger? Now I have to go wash my eyes.
I do the back up, long lens, too, and also can't make the flash work. I've settled on a mid-day shot from a spot in front of a northern-exposed window with a sheet across it. I also gave up light background material a now use a thick dark blue (or green) solid material. The "thick" minimizes wrinkles and the "dark" prevents the lens sensor from being confused and trying to average the light across the whole photo. Finally, I always use a tripod or a rest of some kind. I wouldn't call my shots "good" - more like "improved" from when I started. One trick I learned is to use a longer lens and back up. Lessens the problems with hot spots from the flash.
