Python serial number

Found the site with the serial numbers but mine is apparently fairly new manufacturer- V814XX. The V series starts in 1978, but is there anyway to know when this gun was made? (actual year)

Is there any difference in quality in the Python depending of date of manufacture?

Thanks if anyone can help.

#V814XX was made in 1979.
The V series started that year, beginning at V01001 and went to V88373 by the end of the year.

You'll get a lot of discussion on any gun about "good" years and "bad" years.

The truth is, guns are not vintages of wine.
There are NO "good or bad" years.
There are "good" and "bad" GUNS.

Attempting to buy a gun based on year made will either cause you to buy a dog made in a "good" year, or pass a gem made in a "bad" year.

In general, all gun brands, including the Python, saw quality fall since the 1960's.

To get a good quality Python, you have to LOOK at individual Pythons and select one that looks good.

I've seen Pythons made in the 1950's when quality was supposed to be great, that never should have left the factory.

I've seen Pythons made in the late 1990's when quality was supposed to STINK that were some of the finest Pythons ever made.

Again, you have to judge a gun on it's OWN merits, and pretty well ignore the "year or era made" business.

Thanks so much for the info. I appreciate it. I just got back from the range breaking this gun in. I don't believe it had been shot except to test fire at Colt. Awesome trigger pull in single action. Seems to just go off when you think go off. First group at 25 yards standing with 2 hand hold was about 4-5 inches. At 15 yards on the bench all 6 shots were touching.

I am going to go with the theory that I got a "good" one. :)
