Python question

I recently purchased my first Python. When I was cleaning it today, I noticed that the action will cock and fire when the cylinder is open. I know none of my Smith's or Ruger's will do that. Is this normal for all Colt's or just Python's?

Regarding the other part of your question - I can't speak to all Colts, but my Three Five Seven does the same (no surprise, as it has essentially the same lockwork as the Python), and also my Trooper Mark IIIs, which are a completely different design.

The Python is based on a very old action design and this is normal.

Make sure you do not get into the practice of cocking the action while the cylinder is open. The cylinder hand will be sticking out through the recoil shield and if you forget to decock, and try to close the cylinder , you can damage the mechanism.

Just a different way of doing things. Yes the action can be operated with the cylinder open. However the cylinder can not be closed with the action cocked.

Thanks for the info. I'll try to post a picture.
Sorry about the quality.

Looks like you have a fine 3rd generation Python there. Now check out the Colt Forum to find out more info on the Python. There are many folks there who are members of other forums and are a great help with Colt questions. Enjoy.

I've got to disagree with winchester 73. I'm thankful they WERN'T made by S&W. They'd probably be full of mim parts two piece barrels and "Lawyer Holes":D:D
