PX4 Compact - What do y'all think?

I got a brand new PX4 Compact 9mm and put about 90 rounds through it last week.

I love it - shoots smooth and feels great.

When I was cleaning it the other day, I noticed that the recoil rod has some wear on it - it's a little chewed up on the non-muzzle end. It used to be smooth and black, but now you can see that it's a little worn and exposed on that end.

What do y'all think?

Any PX4 owners have the same condition? Is it normal?

Thanks,

I have a full size and i think it shows some wear also. Not sure how much, I'll look later.

I have around 50-600 rounds through it, so not that much.

That looks more like what we call 'polishing' than 'wear' .If so don't worry.

I don't know..Looks a little rough. Not like, say the barrel of my SIG where it's polished from recoil. Looks like there would be some friction if he ran his fingernail across that.

My nephew had a rough chamber on a Sig recently, its possible the finish is not smooth.

It does not look terrible, but also not right and with that few a rounds through it.

I don't know anything about the PX4 pe se, but my SP2022 after 1000 rounds does not show anything like that.

ps: I did handle one the other day, I like a lot of its feel, the grip is not as well done as the Sig or HK (both have a bit rougher finish and I like it that way so it could be me). I liked how it handled.

I'd definitely give beretta a call and offer to send them pictures. Just to see what they say. Mine was never like that. After a little over 1K rounds. Sold it to my cousin for peanuts cause he needed a gun. Gotta love family discounts.

Anyways. Again. Give beretta a ring.

I have the exact same gun, 9mm in compact. After 1500+ rounds, I don't see any wear like that on the rod. I would definitely give Beretta a call.

As a matter of fact, I barely see ANY wear on the gun after 1500+ rounds and being CC'ed in pancake holster. Not 1 failure, looks like new.

Gotta love good design.

So I followed your advice and gave Beretta a call. They reassured me that it's normal. They added that if it becomes a problem - which it shouldn't - that they can cover it under my 3 year warranty, and they probably could just send me the part and not require me sending in my pistol.

Well...Not going to give my two cents. Just want to know, are you assured? Do you feel better now?

Cause a similar thing has happened to me and I thought I was over it and I wasn't.

As long as you feel fine with it, that's what matters. I would have pushed a little more.

Can someone post a pic of their guide rods?

I'll ask my cousin to see if he can send me a pic of his and I'll post it here. If he ever does -__-

I'm all right with things now.

I'll keep an eye on it, and if it worsens, then I'll just get in touch with Beretta and have them send me a new part. If the same thing happens, then I'll probably have to look into whatever may be causing the issue.

But for now, the pistol works perfectly and nothing looks dangerous or that it will fail.

Just to put a cap on this, in addition to the person I spoke with at Beretta, I also spoke with a very well respected dealer and he also assured me that this is normal wear. He gave me the same simple advice as Beretta - to keep an eye on it, and if the wear gets excessive, to just replace the part since there aren't any problems with the pistol's function.

And Sig told my brother that it just needed to be "broken in"

We have been shooting guns for 55 years, its the sop response.

Mr Sig, my barrel blew up. Oh, it just needs to be broken in, shoot another 200 rounds through it and call us in the morning.

Guide rods should not be shredding.

Its not the rod, its what is rubbing up against.

That would be the barrel, not the rod. So replacing the rod would be a band aid when the issue is the recess. Maybe you can live with it but its a new gun and it should not be like that.

I would get a light and look at where it inserts.

RC20,

Thanks for your feedback. Much of what you've said rings true for me.

I realize that I could be getting the convenient brush off from Beretta, but the person I spoke with, Herbie, I believe, did hear me out and did not seem puzzled, which I would like to believe he would have been if it were a problem that was out of the ordinary.

More importantly, your point about what it is rubbing up against is the answer... as physics dictates. Please follow me here as I describe it since I can't post a pic right now.

If you remove the slide and turn it upside down, and remove the block assembly that the guide rod slides into, and then turn that upside down, you can see a keyhole cut-out where the part of the rod that is getting roughed up sits in - that keyhole and the edges of that aperture are what is grating against the rod.

The hole that the rod sits in and the keyhole that it rests in, look smooth and without blemish and the rod spins easily in the block.

I put a drop of oil on the part that's getting worn and will keep an eye on whether or not it worsens.

Beretta has pretty good CS imo. I'm not a fan of a lot of their products but thats neither here nor there. I think you probably have nothing to worry about. I'm not a gunsmith expert by any stretch so take that with a grain of salt. Bottom line is if you are not comfortable with it stay on Beretta until they satisfy your concern. If they don't trade it off and find a company that will take care of you in a way that you feel comfortable. That goes for any product. People greatly underestimate their power as a consumer.

As far as functionality, it should not have any impact like the dealer and Beretta probably suggested. If anything is the cause, it'll be the locking block which OP seems to agree with.

If I remember correctly, when it was new that area was heavily greased (inside locking block where rod sits). It could very well be possible that the grease held dirt/sand particle, and that particle could've rubbed against and roughed up the rod end.

Just to add, I performed initial cleaning of extra grease before I shot mine for the first time. I would not worry about it, but having said that I do not have that problem with my gun.

diesel,
I also have a new PX4 9mm compact. I have around 300 rounds through it, and this week when cleaning after a range trip, I noticed the same "wear" as yours.
It is hard for me to tell, if it is trully wearing on the material, or only taking off the black finish. I will keep on shooting it while keeping an eye on the subject, I appreciate you bringing it up.

Px4 Sub compact

Howdy,
I just stripped my subcompact to take a look, and mine looks better than the pic you posted... sorry...
And I have about 300 rounds through mine... bought it back in July or August.
I'd complain to whoever you bought it from
