Putty in a Winchester 1894 forend?

I have a real nice pre-64 model 94 with what looks to be a 1/2"X 1/8" putty fill in the forend. Is it possible that it came from the factory like that?

I have collected, researched and shot 94's for many decades and have never seen anything as you describe.

I recently picked up a pre 64 that had a plastic like bedding in the forend that was also stuck around the magazine. The forend was in bad shape so I replaced it with a pre 64 one I found on Ebay and scraped off all the residue from the mag. This was a crude job so I'm pretty sure it was done by a former owner.

No it didn't come from the factory like that.
