Putting stock back on Remington 700

Is a torque wrench a necessary tool in putting the stock back on a rifle? At the moment I just tighten the screws until they are snug.

A torque wrench isn't needed. Nice but not needed. I'm sure you can realize the difference between the right torque and gorilla strength.

Tightening the screws in the correct order is important though. Most 700's will have 2 action screws, some with blind magazines have 3. If you have 2 screws the one in the rear should be just finger tight, then get the front screw TIGHT. Then come back and get the rear screw. It shouldn't be as tight. I'm sure someone can provide specs., I just know when it "feels" right to me.

If you have a blind magazine there is a 3rd screw in the middle. It's only purpose is to hold the trigger guard in place. It should be just tight enough to not fall out.

When I posed that question to Remington for my 700 Long Range, I was told 70 inch pounds.
Maybe because of the Bell and Carlson M40 stock it uses?
