Putting red dots on a Sig

I am pretty much old-school everything but have recently acquired some new technology (For me) that new technology is an AR 15 LOL. I bought a Colt Expanse M4, which comes pretty much naked and has to be completed by the new owner. I put a Bushnell Troohy TRS 25 and I am amazed what it can do. I love that rifle and I love the red dot sight!
Owning at least six handguns that are capable of shooting accurately at 100 yards, an earlier thread today has opened up a whole new world of ideas.
How does one install the red dot? Do you replace the rear sight using the dovetail?
Most of the red dot sight I've seen on rifles have been mounted to a Picatinny rail. I would hate to have to drill and tap my Sig P229 to achieve this quest.

EDIT: I was out and asked this on my phone. I'm back home and found the info in this forum. - Since I'm not in competition, I probably would not want to drill a hole in the slide as many recommended.

You remove the rear sight from the dove tail and install an adapter plate for your gun to mount the dot with. Depends on which dot you end up running. Don't expect a cheap Chineese dot to go more than one magazine before it quits. The Burris FastFire is a very good entry level dot, and you can go up from there to the Docters, RMRs, and Delta Points. your other options are to use a frame mount, or mill the slide to accept a dot, way, way more expensive, but gets it about 1mm lower.
