Pump-Action-Guns illegal, what to buy instead?

In my country, pump-action-shotguns are illegal. Any suggestions for home-defense shotguns with another reliable system and a convincing caliber?

Double then.....

double barrels either over-under or side by side....... Last time I checked an auto loader meant a semi auto ? Did I miss something along the way?
I assume if a pump is a no-no an auto loader is darn sure not allowed. I feel for this person......... I sure do love America....... :D

my choice would be 12 or 20 and a 410 as last option :D

BFR .410 Revolver

Well. . . .assuming semiauto shotguns aren't allowed, you are pretty much left with a double barrel. I suggest something of the coach gun variety (side by side, 20 inch barrels) if they are legal. If you live in the country, you might also try a lever action rifle (do a google search on the tactical 30-30).

IN that vein, there IS a lever action .410 shotgun, but even if its legal, i think you'd be better off with a coach gun.

This is coming from someone with no defense experience.

Although I am far from a fan of the modern Norinco's, I think that they are making an 1887-clone now. Are lever-operated SG's OK?

They make em, but the only ones i've seen are in .410.

I'll let the defense gurus chime in on how effective .410 is.

As another option (as I have said) you may want to consider a lever action in another caliber, such as 30-30 (if you are in the country) or maybe 357 magnum if penetration is an issue.

I still think that a SxS coach gun is your best bet.

Bud i'm no uber defense guy.

It's Austria / Europe (Vienna), Auto Shotguns are legal...

Thank you for your input. I like the idea of a lever-action shotgun. Any experience with that caliber .410 Gauge? (I know pistols only....)

The strange thing is that autoloadershotguns are legal here. Pumpguns were banned after some criminals managed to make it almost the only guns mentioned in the news for this and that crime. So the brilliant politicians banned them. But they didn't ban the autoloaders.

Aren't Autoloaders less reliable. I want a short shotgun....

You can always put a short barrel on the auto.

Double barrel coach guns are cheaper than dirt, likewise some bolt actions.

40 years ago I picked up my Mossberg 195K 12 GA as an "all around" survival gun for a 19 year-old and put a 1 power scope on it. If you are clever and IF IT IS LEGAL you can extend the sheet metal box magazine on the 195K. Actually, seems like I remember someone making a drum feed recently--was that for a shotgun?

Autoshotguns are fairly reliable. I know of one 1100 which functioned flawlessly for 30 years (except for an unprimed cartridge). Keep the gas ports clean and change the o rings and you should be ok. But they do have problems (just like autopistols -- not often, but sometimes).

You might also consider a saiga 12 (or 20). It should be pretty reliable because of the ak action. I don't know tho.

in any country that pump smoothbores are illigal, your probably better off jumping out the window and leaving the BG to your stuff. at least you wont have to spend 10 years in prison for defending your home.

These shotguns are not "tactical" guns, but sporting autoloading shotguns that can do the defense job:

Remington 11/87 Upland Special 12 ga preferable (also available in 20 ga.) 23" bbl. straight stock. There may also be other Rem models available in 23" barrels. They come with three choke tubes, Full, Modified, and Improved, but any type of choke is available aftermarket, including cylinder bore.

The old 1100 Special field had a 21" barrel. I have both and they're great guns for both field and home. However, the 11-87 shoots both 2 3/4" and 3" interchangeably.

The action is so soft with field loads, that I've fired both one-handed.

I've NEVER had a failure to cycle in over 30 years of using Rem 1100s and 11/87s in the field.

Special aftermarket stocks are available.

In that case then, get an autoloader (man, how stupid can people get...banning pumps but not autloaders???).

Winchester SuperX2, Browning Gold, Beretta 390, Benelli M1, Rem 11-87, etc.
