FNG just joined Owner of a PTR 91 18'' target barrel , guy owed me money took the rifle. I have shot HK 91's But know this rifle will need some trigger work, and a eject buffer. Load my own, have a M14, and S/W ar 15 My question whats a decent load for this rifle, bullet gr. , powder load, Varget is what I load in my M1a. I would like some info on this rifle. Good, bad, and is the rifle worth triggering. Price of brass is my concern I know these 91's eat it up. Help me out not sure I want to put anymore money in this rifle unless it's worth it

The PTR91 will do three things to brass:
1) Imprint flutes in the upper half of the case from the chamber flutes. These won't immediately hurt the brass but I am sure it work hardens that area more then otherwise.

2) Eject the brass 25' - 30 ' in the 1:00 - 2:00 direction.

3) Often puts a dent in the lower portion of the case.

A port buffer http://www.robertrtg.com/pofport_carry.html has a rubber edge to prevents the dents and keep the brass within a few feet.

You can use pretty much any .308 load in a PTR91. I have found no reference to any restriction. I have no reason to push the .308 to its limits so I generally load a grain or two below max in the load tables. Varget, RL15, BL-C2, TAC are good ones and you can use slower ones as well. I usually stick with 150 gr - 168 gr bullets. I would just use whatever you currently load for your M1A as a starting point and then tune for accuracy from there.

I've also shot some Federal, Winchester, and Remington hunting soft point ammo in it with no issues. Supposedly there are issues with some factory ammo but I have not shot enough of any of them to find out what that is. A couple of boxes of each brand worked fine.

I also use an RCBS X-Die for resizing and that keeps the case from stretching during resizing. Some guys wuill dispute that but I've never heard of someone actually using the die and finding any of RCBS' claims to be false. My own experience is that it works as advertised and I get more reloads per case than regular full length sizing (not to be compared to neck-only sizing of course which does not work any of the case body brass at all).

Have RCBS X die for my M1A, asking my self should I trigger this rifle, & who makes a decent trigger install Mag PR stock. I'm more concerned about brass to reload. I have a leupold 6X18 scope in safe will the new HK low rail mount work for this scope or will the front scope ring cause problems. If I decide to keep this rifle will buy new brass to fire form to the PTR 91 won't mix it with M1a fired brass

Pilgrim I'm on the same page for loads I push the loads heavy just don't max anymore. I shot 168 gr BT 41 gr. Varget in my M1a plus a good break for recoil New weapon and have never been around a PTR 91 only Hk and there shooters.

Williams does nice trigger work, and offers a couple of options. My buddy had one of his HK91's done, and its more inline with what US shooters tend to like. Personally, I think ts to light for a gun that might be carried "loaded".

I had a couple of HK91's and an MP5, and found that once you get used to the HK triggers, its really not a big deal. Contrary to what some will tell you, you can shoot very well with them as they come, you just need to learn them. I also found I was a lot less of a "trigger baby" once I did get used to them, and I wasnt as sensitive to some other things, as I had been in the past. Its sort of like learning to shoot a handgun DAO. Once you learn those triggers, you can shoot pretty much anything, and arent "stuck" or limited to a specific type, like you are if you only shoot a SA gun.

Loading wise, I had a port buffer on both my 91's, so the "dent" thing wasnt an issue. The flutes really arent a worry either, and most come out of the tumbler barely noticeable. I did notice that I usually only got around 6 reloads out of the same brass I would get 10+ out of in my M1A's, or M1 (I only load commercial brass). Thats assuming the case mouths survived that long with any of them. I think the HK's action/extraction is just harder on the brass, and case head separation indicators always seemed to come in about half the time. I only load one load for .308, as I have a number of rifles chambered in it, and it just keeps things simple. Except for a few special purposes, I use mostly 150 grain bullets over 4895 or 4064, and it was never an issue in the 91's.
