Pt 2: And I did it my way

I also think USP did a good thing. I didn't read all of the last thread, but but I get the idea. I can't carry openly within the law here in Illinois but I've been planning to do it in another state I'm visiting soon. I don't expect to be hassled that much, but if I am, too bad. USP is right. You can only tiptoe around being afraid of your shadow for so long. If we're afraid to do something we know is right just because it's uncommon, even strange, and a lot of people are misinformed about it, then why do we even own guns?

Just bought a holster with a retention strap for this very purpose today, and I'm feeling good about it. Even better now. Thanks, USP.

Don...what I did to make a statement on Illinois' anti-freedom laws was moving to a State that doesn't want to be a dictatorship. (New Mexico) When I go to visit family in Southern Indiana, I fill up in St. Louis and make the long stretch accross Illinois, not buying a penny's worth of anything. They will never see another dime of my tax money again. :-)

My wife is a staunch native. She agrees in theory that Illinois has terribly repressive laws, but she's not to the point of moving yet. We'll see. I'd like to see what Indiana has to offer, myself.
But first I'm going to help Bush win Illinois.

I've been keeping out of the major chains. Just been carring to the gun stores while I "check" em out for people, attitudes, prices, knowledge, etc.. A couple of people asked me if it was okay to carry open and I gave them a copy of the document that states that Oregon doesn't have a ban on open carry and also that the cities of Eugene/Springfield don't have any bans either. I did tell them to call the Lane County Sheriff to varify. I'm not a lawyer and they need to do some research on their own just in case they lied to me. The owner of one of the shops stated that he'd heard it's okay but didn't bother to find out... he went ahead and got three buddies to vouce for him and got his CHL (of which he then showed me his carry gun (before you ask, a GP100 for that day, he has a carry gun for each day of the week)). He's a big fan of wheel guns and he owns the shop, no telling what he'll be carring tomorrow or the next day. Nice fellow, he's one of the "geezers" :). Calls me Son and Boy so that tells you somewhat of his age. I like his attitude, the atmosphere, and him but he's got very limited stock and is somewhat overpriced. I think this is a "got to get to know him and he gets to like me" type of deal. Like I've said, been staying clear of major stores for right now. Don't want to give too many people a shock to soon. I've also found that open carry in public parks is a no-no unless it has a hunting or fishing season. I am practicing in a mirror for the right "look" (facial expressions, body language, where I place my hands when I am listening or talking to an anti/LEO (no crossing of the arms on the chest and no hands near the pistol, I've found Parade Rest works fine but in a more "casual" stance) and especially how I will respond to any LEO's who are called to the scene). Also working on how I can bite my lip and smile while being yelled at or belittled by anti's. How to hold my temper and speak in a normal voice . I've made the first step, now it's time to improve it to an art.

Don,

Get out of Illinois ASAP. Indiana is much gooder ;) when it comes to carry laws.

USP45usp,

I agree with JJR from Part I.

Kudos to you USP45 for exercising your right. Here in Canada I have to get a permit from the PROVINCIAL GOVERNMENT to transport my unloaded, trigger-locked pistol in a locked "opaque container that is not easily broken into" from my house to the range or to the store for repairs etc. and vice versa. I must go directly from one to the other and it is illegal for me to chamber live ammo anywhere but the range, including at home. Please remember us whenever you complain about your current laws in the US. It could get that bad for you but, I would prefer for it to get better for us up here.

When there are laws against open carry are they only for "Loaded?" Say I want to walk (or bicycle) to the range here in kalifornia, I know the hand gun can't be concealed and the long gun is too hard to conceal, so shouldnt I be able to carry open with loaded mags on other side of belt? Driving is a privilege and cannot be forced on anyone. So how do I get to the range with a hand gun and rifle?
And why cant I walk around town with unloaded hand gun in holster? (you know I am responsible if it falls into the hands of children) what better way to prevent that than to have the gun and ammo with me?

Oberkommando, there's no way anybody can tell you a general rule about laws. They just vary too wildly from place to place. You'll have to find out the specific law for your own area. Maybe some TFLers live near you, though. I'm sure there are places where you just can't carry "loaded" firearms, but in Illinois, UUW is defined as carrying a firearm at all for any reason; then the legal methods are written into the law as "a person shall be exempt from the charge of UUW when....."

CO varies widely on some of this gun-stuff.

I've a CCW from Larmier County & part of the "agreement" is that I am not allowed to carry openly any more.

Can kinda see the point (sorta) but go figure.
