Psychological Impressions

If handguns had personalities, which type looks more menacing to you, a revolver, or a semiauto? I'm not talking about logic, or technical specs, or which is better. This is about impressions. For instance, I myself think a revolver looks more menacing than a semiauto. I'm not sure why...maybe it's the fact that the barrel is not hidden inside a metal or polymer sheath, but juts out like the deck guns of a battleship. Maybe it's because the cylinder is an exposed component that you can watch turn as it brings another round of it's deadly cargo into position. To me, it looks like a revolver has a chip on its shoulder. By comparison, semiautos look kind of mellow. The cartridges are hidden inside a magazine that's hidden inside the grip. A revolver seems like a coiled viper with fangs barred, ready to strike, whereas a semiauto seems more like a rattlesnake resting inside a sleeping bag. I would respect both, but they each give me a different impression. Maybe you see it differently. What are your impressions?

If I'm looking down the business end, the bigger the hole the more scared I am.
+1. Bigger = scarier.

Also, I think watching the slow movement of the working parts on a revolver as the trigger is being pulled would probably be the scariest thing to see right before you go...

While I agree with the bigger the hole, the scarier the gun I am not going to take the time to evaluate what caliber the gun is. A gun aimed at you, is scary in general.

Stargazer, I agree with you that a revolver is personally scarier to me than a semi-auto. Looking down the barrel, and watching the bullets in the cylinder cycle, when the hammer is pulled is pretty intimidating.

Also if one has a revolver I will assume he is a good enough shot to not need the extra capacity that a semi-auto gives .

P.S. I am not that good of a shot :D.....yet.

Esp. once it just went "ker-click" as it's being cocked...

Though I'm not a big fan of wheelguns, I'd have to say looking down the receiving end of one would be worse, especially one of them big 'ol 6-10" buggers. Although, honestly looking down the wrong end of a 12ga is pretty much a "shat yourself" situation. I knocked on my neighbors door at 3am once to tell him that his horses got out after someone crashed into his fence. Wow, think I'll just call him next time.

A 3 1/2 inch Smith and Wesson Model 27 looks particularly pugnacious.

A close runner up is a 4" Smith Heavy Duty. I do have one of those. I would dearly like to run accross a 3 1/2 M27 one ay with enough money in my pocket to take it home.

Oddly enough, I think I'd be more frightened of a small gun pointed at me, for the simple fact that I'd be a lot more worried that the person wielding it knows how to use it effectively as opposed to someone using the biggest gun they can find and using visual impact to make up for the fact that they really don't know how to handle a gun.

Psychologically, it really depends on the person being asked. I, personally thing the Smith & Wesson 500 looks scary as heck. It's a big nasty revolver, with a half inch hole in the barrell.

However, to some people, an M1911A1 is the scariest (insert colorful words here) thing ever. Something about the pure reliability, .45ACP cartridge, all metal construction and the track record the .45 has....

Not really sure, since it was at night, but I once was looking at the "wrong" end of a 1911 (I think).

All I can remember was the moon light reflected on the (stainless?) frame and the big, black hole looking straight to me...

Don't know if it was loaded, but the experience definitely wasn't pleasant.

And no, it wasn't a mugger/robber; just a trigger happy LEO.

Also if one has a revolver I will assume he is a good enough shot to not need the extra capacity that a semi-auto gives

My thought was just the opposite. I see revolvers as the goto/standby gun for those with the least amount of shooting experience. So given the typicaly greater trigger pull, lack of capacity, and probable lack of experience of the bad guy pointing it at me, I think I would have a better chance coming out of the incident unscathed or less injured than if the person had a Glock or some other high capacity gun.

Pesonally, I think a semi-auto "looks" more lethal. Revolvers always remind me of bad '70's cop shows where the cop fires 20 rounds from his snub nose .38 special, never hitting or even wounding anyone.

i've always thought the look of a mouser broom handle looked pretty wicked.

or something like a mac10 in .45acp

or a full size coonan .357 1911 stainless especially if you see that big boy get upholstered
