+Ps in Two Revolvers

Hey guys, I have two questions that I think I know the answer to, but I want to make sure.

1) I just aquired a S&W model 36 in stainless steel. Is it safe to carry +P ammo in this gun?

2) My girlfriend has a Rossi model 851 (the same size as a K frame S&W) also in stainless. Is it safe to put +Ps through this gun?

I would not be feeding these guns a steady diet of +Ps, just enough to function test the guns and carry in them. I don't think there should be a problem with either gun with only a few going through them, but I want to be sure.

Thanks

OK...

What I have is a model 36, and it sure looks (and feels) like stainless to me.

So assuming you are right (and you might be), and it is chromed or something, would 2 cylinders of +P hurt it?

Your 36 is probably a nickeled model, the stainless one is the Model 60. Compared to stainless or chrome, the nickel has a slight yellowish tone. Your 36 was probably not intended for +P, some of the later J Frame .38's were marked for +P. On an individual basis, I carry +P in my alloy framed M 38. I know it's not good for the gun, but I would rather replace it someday and have the advantage of the hotter load. You'll have to make your own call on this one.

Over the years, this may have been the most frequently asked question in the gun magazines.

Succinctly, a modest use of Plus P in steel guns has always been considered okay. It can stretch alloy frames, except those made recently and warranted for such use. M60's made with -4 or higher suffixes are okay for Plus P, but I wouldn't get carried away with it; just familiarize yourself with the load of choice, then use it in the field when needed, as in shooting rabid or otherwise dangerous animals or venomous snakes. Carry it basically for defense... anything but target shooting, plinking, and hunting small game that doesn't need Plus P power.

The model of your gun is probably stamped inside the frame when you swing the cylinder out, unless it was made before 1957.
I don't know the data for non-stainless Chiefs that are suitable for warranted use with Plus P. Ask S&W or buy a copy of Nahas and Supica's book.
