proven "scent free" mosquito repellant?

Go to a Thermocell. You'll never use a spray-on again while in a treestand. With a spray repellant, you'll still have them buzzing around your head driving you nuts. With the Thermocell, you won't even have that. The only downside is that they don't work in the wind. However, if you have wind, you generally don't have a mosquito problem anyway.

ThermaCell question

I saw that it kinda makes a little cloud around you to keep that buggers away. But could it be used still-hunting?? I move pretty slow 1/3 moving to 2/3 standing and looking.

Also what happens when the wind blows...course, if it is windy enough, there aren't bugs..

If the wind is just lightly blowing, I hang it on a limb on the upwind side of me. If the wind is blowing too much for that, then it is probably blowing good enough to keep the bugs away.

As far as using it when still hunting, that would be hard to do. In order to be effective, it needs to be sitting horizontally so that the air rises through the scent pad. I have a camo "holster" for mine. I could possibly hang it underneath my backpack, but it would bounce around. I wouldn't want it really tight to me because the head does get somewhat warm.

i agree, it's not scent free but the scent it does release does not alarm game animals. a bug suit is a joke, i have one. i used it before Thermacells came out. the suit helps but is no where as effective as the Thermacell. our skeeters bite through the bug suit "Bug Tamer". also, Lord help you if the skeeters find a way inside your suit (throught the bottom or neck hole) because then they are trapped in and free to eat you at will.

Thermacell is a must. I also cover my clothes with Duranon. If a mosquito does land on you, he dies. Also keeps ticks off. I have not had a tick on me in the few years I have been using this stuff. Of course, I have developed a funny twitch! hahaha

Odd that this topic centers around FL! Skeeters have never bothered me much but I'm always concerned about what they might bring to me in the way od diseases and they're really distracting when clustered around your face and humming around your ears, messing with your hearing.

On of my bro's bought me some stuff called Deerhunter's Insect Repellent, it's 55% DEET and comes in a spray bottle. I put it on my hood and it keeps the little suckers another 6" away. I wear a jungle hat under a screen hood.

Thanks for all the input. Iwas reading a bit on the Thermacell. They said the pad you use lasts approx. 12 hrs. Question, say I go hunting in evening approx. 4 hours. Can i turn the thermacell off when I`m done that night and use same pad the next night or would i have to install new pad? Swampghost , is Deerhunters Repellent scent free?

As daft as it sounds, 500mcg of vitamin B-12 taken daily for about 2 to 3 weeks prior to and during your hunt will keep mossies away or lessen the itch time significantly. A head net that fits over your hat will remove the annoyance. Otherwise, any spray high in DEET content will do.
In any case, even in the worst years, they're only out for about 2 hours at dawn and dusk in fields. In the bush, they'll carry you away if they can.

I have not found that the Thermacell pads last for 12 hours. More like 4 or 6. I just keep a bunch of extras in my pack and replace them as needed. You can reuse the same pad until it is worn out. You can also stretch out the use times. I keep mine on for around 20 minutes. I then turn it off, sometimes for 30 - 45 minutes. I then will turn it back on when I start getting buzzed again.

Plus a bunch to the thermacell. If you are walking around, it doesn't work as well.
For those times, I use a product called " No stinkin Bugs". It comes in odorless or Fall Blend. I have used it alot and like it. They have "No stinkin Ticks" too.

yes shortwave. i always cut mine off when the sun starts to rise to save the pad and butane cartridge. i only use mine during the "peak" skeeter hours. 2 butane cartridges normally last me an entire season due to not leaving them on beyond when it is needed. the pads normally last me around 6-8 hours each. hope this helps

Something I've used since the late 40s is eucalyptus oil. It is certainly NOT scent-free, but the odor does not appear to spook game animals. I've had deer within a few yards and not had them spook. Until I moved, that is. :D

I'm not sure what I did before I got a thermacell. They are worth their weight in gold. Pads change from blue to white when they are spent so it's easy to track how long you got left. An extra butane cylinder and a few extra pads take up very little space in a fanny pack.

I've never had it spook deer, but it does keep the skeeters away. I use it hunting in the fall and during the summer we keep it up by our pool to keep the bugs away from the kids (and us).
