Here's the deal. For close to two grand (includes Tax, extra mag, etc.) I can get from Wilson Combat a 1911 Protector in stainless steel. It sure has caught my eye.I like those cocobolo grips. Beside the $$$, the wait is about 6 months give or take! What should I do?

For less money than that, you can get a true custom 1911 from a one man gunsmith. Or Rock River Arms ( www.rockriverarms.com ). Don't get me wrong, Wilson makes a good gun. But why buy a production gun when you can get a true custom gun built to YOUR exact specs, using different high quality compents rather than those made by just one manufacturer, with more handfitting and attention to details, for less money?

One of my co-workers own an RRA match master steel with scope mount in .38 Super. He uses an aimpoint red dot scope. This is his comp gun. However, he does own a Millennium Protector but it's blue not stainless.

Both shoot very well but it's near impossible to judge them side by side due to the caliber difference. You will not be disappointed by either. The Wilson comes with a lifetime guarantee. I'm not sure what the RRA guarantee is.

Personally, I would recommend the blue gun over the stainless if you want a pure tack driver. You can get a better fitting with a blue gun. Down the road, if you want that shiny stainless look, you can get it hard chromed. If you decide on a Protector, order it from Terry Peters. He owns P&T Partners. That way, you don't have to pay sales tax (unless you live in Texas).

Wilson's reputation speaks for itself. His customer service is outstanding. When I talked to RRA a week ago to order my slide and frame, they were extremely nice people to deal with. Very friendly.

PERSONALLY, I would take the Wilson for the extra money because they're well proven. I don't personally know of any Wilson owners that do not love their performance. RRA is still kinda new. I'll wait a bit before I get one. Regardless of whatever you decide on, you'll be happy. I hope this helps.

P.S. I own a Wilson CQB and Sentinel. The only time I fired an RRA was through two friends of mine.

On what planet is a Wilson blue Protector $1226.95, and how do I get there?

OOPS, I misread his post. I thought he was asking about the Millennium Protector.

Hardball,
When I bought my first Motorcycle helmet in 1964, the salesman asked me the same question. I told him not much. :D I'm really not talking about money, but quality. A custom pistol in my mind is more like a fine wine or a sweet piece of a**. If it is my life we are talking about, the BG will get my Mossy or Glock as a treat. So, does anyone have any comments on the qualty of the Protector. Thanks.

Fit & finish on my Protector out of the box was superb...accuracy lives up to the claims...zero malfunctions on a mixed lot of ammo now over 2000rds...zero finish wear after 5 months of carry in a Rosen IWB.I'm one fussy bastard when I spend the dollars for "premium" and I like it!Regards.

I have a Wilson Protector with over 20,000 rounds through it this gun is reliable, accurate and is still tight. It will still shoot groups just a little over an inch with both my swc handloads and jhps.I use this gun in IDPA and for dailey self defense. In my opinion they are worth the money. Good luck with what ever you decide.
