Pros and cons on Winchester 1300 w/rifle sights

What do you think? Is it any good for defense, hunting, messing around? Thanks.

Rifled bbls excel at shooting Sabot loads at deer and other medium game and at nothing else. Very specialized, and part of the allure shotguns have is due to their flexibility.

For a dedicated deer gun, a rifled bbl will do fine, once performance is tweaked a bit and the best load chosen after range testing.

The 1300's a good shotgun, tho not my favorite. To do it all, you'd need the rifled bbl for deer, a short smoothbore bbl for HD, and a longer bbl for bird hunting and clay games. Most folks use a short smoothbore bbl, oft with rifle style sights for HD and deer, and a longer choke tubed bbl for birds and clays.

I suggest getting something more GP for a first shotgun, and leave the dedicated guns alone until later.

HTH....

Thanks Dave, but I must really be losing it. It doesn't have a rifled barrel, it just has a barrel with rifle sights! I don't know how I did that.

:D

The only other barrel you would need is a bird barrel. The smoothbore barrel with rifle sights is almost perfect (IMHO) for slug hunting and home defense. If your not going to do pass shooting at ducks and geese, a 26 inch improved cylinder is very hard to beat. Usually works fine for steel shot on decoys as well.
