Proper way to set a polychoke?

I recently inherited my Father's 12-gauge Remington 58 Sportsman shotgun.

It has a Polychoke Delux on it. Other than it being ugly as sin, I'm just not sure how I'm supposed to adjust it so that the fingers in the choke have the right constriction.

Do I screw it the WHOLE way down and then start backing it out? Or should it be out a turn before I get the proper constriction?

Anyone have the directions for a polychoke they could scan and send me?

At last a man after my own heart. All my guns have Polychokes and I will be happy to give you what I know.

Screw the choke in as far as it will go. When it is very tight, back off one click. Then set it to the choke you want. It takes very small adjustments from one choke to the next. Just go by the clicks and you will have all 9 chokes before you turn it two complete turns.

I had all my guns cut down to 24" and had deluxe Polychokes installed. I really wish you wouldn't call them ugly as I like the looks of them. They are much more handy than those screw-in jobs that come with new guns.

BTW, Polychoke has an adjustable choke to replace the aggravating screw-ins. Just screw the Polychoke in and forget it. Hey, no more stuck chokes as it doesn't matter anymore. You won't need to take it out unless you want to during your annual cleaning of the barrel.

At turkey shoots, I screw it in as tight as it will go and shoot with it there. These Polychokes are great gadgets and well worth the $90.00 they cost.

Well, I actually dislike the thing quite a bit. :) UUUUUGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!

Plus, if I really want to hit the target I have to partially to fully obscure it with the choke.

When I was shooting with it last Saturday I was doing pretty well. When I covered the clay bird with the top of the choke, I was SMOKING them. I shot two rounds of wobble trap and hit 23 the first time and 22 the second.

I bought the shotgun for my Father back in 1986, and with his death in February it came back to me.

I prefer my Winchester with the Winchokes. But it's a pump, and I like a semi for wobble.

Mike,
I am sorry for your loss.
58 Sportsman is a neat gun!

Turd. We also called these a "turd"
Hey look! Mike is kicking butt at wobble with a turd on his gun!
We always got a kick out of stuff like this, still do. Especially when shooting against some "low spark with high heeled ".- folks.
Tacky is good, but you know this.

Setting it is a described above, as you know each gun /choke/turd is different, so pattern to see what load likes what setting and keep a mental note.
Heck you have forgotten more than most will ever learn.

Turds are neat.
Cutt's are neat too. Totally unnerves folks shooting against you with the piercing sharp recoil, especially coming 'off' a high or low house at skeet.

Sorta like two stroke race bike, fine for the rider, drives those around the bike nuts with the sound.

Turds-n-Cutts's - two great tools to use to blow mental games shooting against folks, especially if some money "accidentally" falls into a hat or cigar box.
Not that I would know anything about this personally you understand.
Though I did often shoot a JCHiggins with a Turd.
Some just hated them things, only right to shoot against them with this gun. *smirk*

58 Sportsman-
Neat gun, sentimental of course, and I will always get a kick out of folks "that can fell with a stick" beating the folks trying to buy skill and targets with the latest greatest.

Harley Nolden I bet has a set of instructions...

Steve

Mike - When they installed mine (Rem 870 16 gauge) they mounted the bead on the portion of the choke that's attached to the barrel which made the gun shoot low. I had a local gunsmith remount it back on the barrel (where it belongs) just behind the choke and now it works just fine, just gotta keep both eyes open if you don't already. :)

Growing up as a kid in the seventies, we used to laugh at the poly chokes and we called them "dial a duck". We used to cry at how many beautiful Auto-5's we would see with these gadgets installed...
I guess they actually work though? LOL!!

Wow, this rose from the dead.

Chuck, yeah, I figured out how to properly set my Polychoke several years ago, and I have broken many clay birds with it since then.

"Dial a duck"

I like that. :)

Polychoke

I used to have a Browning A-5. I found a used barrel witha Cutts. Shot a lot of skeet with it as well as in 3 gun match. I eventually had all the choke tubes available, including a POLYCHOKE that screwed into the Cutts.

Wish I still had it.........:(

The LGS has a beautiful old bolt action 12 gauge that looks like it just came home from Sears (J.C. Higgins) yesterday with a factory polychoke for $90.
I might have to buy it just to experiment with it?
