Promag magazines, any good?

long shot

New member
I would like opinions on Promag magazines, particularly the ones w/the synthetic shell & metal lining, not the all plastic make.

Are these reliable?

If not, would an extra pwr. mag spring, glock hi-cap follower, & glock baseplate prove reliable?

I've got a whole bunch of brand new ProMags that I'm willing to let go for $5 a piece (one third what I paid for them) to anyone who is interested -- that's how good they are in my opinion.

Say, FUD, what gun are those mags for? I might be interested.

I've bought a bunch of ProMags (about 20 of various types) for my CZ-75, CZ-85, and SW 669. Have had absolutely no problems.

(I've been shooting a lot of IDPA and a Plate Match or two, and extra mags comes in handy.)

I've heard ugly things about ProMag's plastic (no metal liner) Glock mags, but pretty good things about their metal-lined Glock mags.

I'm thinking about buying a couple more Hi-Caps for my CZ-75/85s from CDNN, as they're only $14.99. And the three I've got work flawlessly.

Your mileage may vary.

I tried 'em.
They're crap. Poorly made, don't seat correctly or reliably. Buy factory mags, or if they happen to make 'em for your particular gun, Mec-Gar. Best.

If we're talking about the steel lined polymer mags made for the Glock 17 and 19, they're great.

I've had 14 (six for my 17/34 and eight for my 19) of the steel lined polymer mags made
by Pro-Mag for a couple of years.

They have all been reliable for me. The original springs were a little wimpy and I replaced them after about six months with Wolff brand springs. Other than that, they have been trouble free.

I forgot to add, I have a bunch of Pro-Mag brand mags for the Ruger P series and S&W 59xx series and they have all been reliable as well.

I just bought three promags for my sig 228. they are all metal, 13 round, and after i got all the grease out i loaded them up and they shot great. i paid $10 each for them.

Walt, I've got them for a S&W 59, Browning BDA380 and a S&W6906. They're bre-ban, hi-cap mags. However, I personally would not stake my life on them (which is what you do when you use them in a self defense weapon) and they're no fun at the range either because rarely will one complete mag feed without some type of malfunction.

If anyone is interested, e-mail me privately and we can work something out. Even though I could make some money on this, I would advise AGAINST it unless you have some other purpose in mind besides loading bullets into them.

Arggh! So *that’s* where I went wrong!
Walt, if only I had known what you just told us......

I have a handful of (non-metal) hi-cap Pro-Mags for a Glock 17. None work! Not a single one!

If I’m lucky enough to load the first round and fire it, one or two loaded
cartridges fly out with the empty! (I have never seen that before!!)
Double feeds are common.
(I had to invent new vulgarities to express my displeasure.)

Having nothing to lose, I took one apart and filed out a bunch of
“irregularities” inside the mag. Now it works - sometimes ... sort of....
maybe!

I’m even afraid to sell ‘em because I might see the buyer again some time!
Worse! What if the buyer uses them for defense without checking them out!
I’d be lower than a saboteur!

I ended up buying the factory hi-caps - they work, every time.

Just tried the three I got from Cabelas for my Beretta 21A. Two are full of grease and the third is going back since it won't eject.

In my opinion, any Pro-Mag product will be hit or miss.

That said, I have six Glock 19 Pro-Mags of the unlined persuasion and one lined. All feed and function 100%. I have hundreds of rounds through these mags. I use mine for carry, and I trust them, as they have had plenty of rounds through 'em to convince me of their reliability.

long shot,

As you can see from the mix bag reports of pro-mags they are hit and miss. I'd recommend looking for Mecgar mags, I got a pair of p228 nickel mecgar mags for 12.99...if you pay a little more you can get something just as good as factory but half their cost.

Of the three Promags that I've owned, none did not end up in the trash (pardon the grammer). Some people have better luck than others. I'd have to agree with others that either go with factory or the Mec-Gar mags. Incidentally, Mec-Gar makes the factory mags for several firearms manufacturers.

Has anybody tested Pro-Mag's "Lifetime Guarantee"? Their website makes their stuff sound like the best thing since white-out, superglue and duct tape. If their stuff malfunctions, do they stand behind it?

I have a Mecgar mag for my p226 ... doesn't seat properly, and jams more often than it feeds. On the other hand, I've never had a problem with any of my factory mags.

And, since I'm bitching already... Star followers suck, too.

My bottom line -- if you're going to put after-market mags in your weapon, you might as well put handloads in your mags.

YMMV.
