David L. Huber , US Attorney for the Western District of KY announced today that on Thursday, William Irving Shultz, 32 of 11993 State Route 303, Sedalia, plead guilty to possession of a firearm after he had previously been convicted of a felony offense and to possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number, according to a news release. The maximum penalties are 15 years imprisonment, a $500,000.00 fine and 3 years of supervised release following release from prison. Shultz admitted that on or about and between 11 June an 15 June of this year he possessed a loaded 45 caliber Ruger handgun that had an obliterated serial number. He also admitted that on 6 December, 1993, he was convicted in Graves County Court of being a felon in possession of a firearm. The case was prosecuted by Assistant US Attorney David Sparks and it was investigated by the BATFE and the Calloway County Sheriffs Office. This case was a Project Backfire prosecution. Project Backfire is a partnership of state and federal law enforcement which targets violent offenders for prosecution to the fullest extent of state and federal law. The plea was entered before Edward H. Johnstone, Senir Judge, US District Court, Paducah. Shultz is scheduled to appear for sentencing before Judge Johnstone on 2 February at 1100 in Paducah.
